  • Help Needed: What will fix this paint damage?

All, I am hoping you can help me with some paint problems. I'm no expert in detailing, but I've done my share of waxing, etc. on my past cars. I live in the city (Chicago) and the "L" (elevated) train tracks dropped some nasty tar-like stuff on my car. It was all over in tons of places, and I found nothing could remove it. I finally resorted to using some a couple products I found online (Tarminator). However, I found that in some places the paint has been pretty badly damaged - I assume by the tar-like stuff itself, and possibly my aggressive approach to remover it (unfortunately I had no option...it was bad...real bad).

I'm not sure how to correct the paint damage shown below? I have both the dis-coloration, along with some minor/fine scratches from removal, and I think just incorrect care previously. I basically want to clean up the paint and get it looking new again.

What product/approach should I take here? I was thinking of using the following in the order specified, but I'm open to input. I believe the below would require picking up a Meguiar's DA as well, and just to properly get the paint cleaned up, correct?
    1. Meguiar's C-2000 Professional Detailing Clay (Mild) to clean off any junk that has accumulated on the paint.
    2. Meguiar's Ultimate Compound (m205) to remove minor scratches, etc from the paint
    3. Meguiar's Ultra Finishing Polish
    4. Meguiar's 7 Mirror Glaze Professional Show Car Glaze. 16 oz. liquid
Then finish off with wax, maybe a sealant glaze? What do people think?

Here is just some of the damage this tar junk did, and this is probably the worst of it. Otherwise though it was literally all over the car and I had to spend 1/2 the day removing all of the stuff. Ridiculous that this stuff falls down from the L tracks.

Re: Help Needed: What will fix this paint damage?

    Well, in general:

    1. Wash
    2. Clay + Lubricant
    3. Clean: #205 for mild cleaning, Ult. Compound for stronger cleaning
    4. Polish - #7 would be optional here, #205 is pretty good stuff.
    5. Wax - Ult. Wax is the best protecting wax Meguiars has at the moment... dont know if it would have held off that stuff or not.
    6. Wax - 2 thin coats is best

You could try some test spots with #205 over those areas, and see if it improves anything, or at least gives a cleaner indication of what you are looking at.

Definitely try Ultimate Compound. It's cheap, easy, and very effective. If you wanted to give your paint a nice clean, you could see how 205 worked for spiffing it up, and use UC only on the spots that needed it. Some paints are soft and workable enough that 205 will be enough.
