  • Which Products Eat Through Their Plastic Containers?

I know the title sounds a bit strange but I was curious as to which products go bad and percolates through their plastic containers? I know that polishes and liquid waxes go bad after a few years and the indication of this is when they separate. The reason I'm asking is because my hyper-dressing (barely used) went bad a couple months ago. I never saw separation of this product. One day, I just found a puddle of oily substance in my garage floor. I was able to trace where it's coming from and found the culprit to be my gallon of hyper-dressing. As I inspected further, the plastic container was oily throughout which means that the dressing permeated through the plastic container. The dressing was also slightly discolored and not blue anymore. Now I have a gallon of super degreaser and APC+ bought at the same time that looked perfectly normal.

First question is why did my hyper dressing do this? Does it have an acidic component that eats the plastic over time?

Second question is what products do this? So that we know which chemicals have a shelf life and have to be used before going bad.

Thanks for your thoughts and inputs.

I would think APC is stronger than that, and I have several APC bottles that are several years (3-4+) old with no issues.

    Was it at a seam?

I agree with you. Like I said, I have an APC+ and super degreaser that were both bought at the same time as the hyper dressing and they're both perfectly fine.

The whole bottle was oily so the product was seeping through the entire container. The leak was at the very bottom. It was sitting on top of a very small metal bump and that bump probably stressed the weakened plastic container enough to make it leak.

Marc, this is really bizarre indeed. Hyper Dressing is a water based dressing and there is certainly nothing acidic in it. I've got a bottle at home that is at least 6 years old, and maybe quite a bit older - I bought it 6 years ago and, quite frankly, the bottle looked pretty old and dusty when I got it (this predates my employment here at Meguiar's, by the way). Some color drift over time is common and nothing at all to worry about - loss of color will not negatively impact the viability of the product itself.

Otherwise, Marc, please check your PMs in a bit as I'm about to send you one!

*Runs in basement to check all the dusty products in the back!*

I have a bunch of old D-line products too and never noticed anything like that. I notice some of the bottles tend to cave in on the sides over time and not sure what causes that.

IMHO, the cause is temp changes, hot pushes air out, and the cool temps collapses the bottle.

Another reason to buy paste waxes, they last just about forever if you keep them in a temperature controlled environment. A few guys over on AutoGeekOnline have fridges in their garage that they keep their botique waxes in. That's taking it a bit far if you ask me

I have to agree with Marc. I had the same thing happen to my bottle of Hyperwash. At the time I thought it must have gotten punctured by something, but the bottle was just as he discribed above.
