+1 for soapy water. If I know I'll be claying, I fill up a spray bottle with my fresh soap water.

I read somewhere that using dish soap water disintegrates the clay faster.. so its something to consider.

If you store the clay for a while, like you clay 1 or twice a year, the soap may break it down.

Or use car soap, and just use small pieces, use them for the paint, glass... wheels later on, and wont matter by then if it breaks down.

I would change it once I realize no matter how many times I fold it there's still dirt on there. Then it would be evident that it needs changing.

I won't recommend using just water as when claying you are removing contaminents is a smooth surface would ensure that the clay does not create any marks on your paint (such as dragging the contaminent on a non-smooth surface).

Unless your clay recommends the use of just water as lube (yes, there are some that do, though none available in the US), I'd use a proper clay lube. Something like 8 oz of ONR sells for 7.99, and dilutes to over 4 gallons of lube; the 32 oz size selling for 15.99 would give you over 16 gallons - that's less than a dollar per gallon of clay lube.

Soapy water is "ok" but not just straight water. There have been some good alternate suggestions already posted if you run out of QD, you could also try Last Touch from the detailer line at 1:1 ratio

I buy the kits. It's about the same price as just clay and comes with a microfiber and bottle of qd. I always have qd left over.
