  • A couple of questions from a long time lurker...

    Hello,

So my fiance' recently informed me that she wanted to participate in the detailing of our vehicles. Shocked I was. Fast forwarding and to not jinx it, I got on the ball and picked up a few products for her and myself. As I know a big wheel would simply change her mind completely, much how I curse it - considering it's in my hands 8 hours a day.

    PC 7424XP w/ 18001 6 Inch / 6 Hole, Hook and Loop Back Plate
    Meguiars G110v2
    Meguiars W8006 (6.5 Burgundy Cut)
    Meguiars W7006 (6.5 Yellow Polishing)
    Meguiars W9207 (7 Finishing)
Pinn Clay and Polishin' Buddy w/ Clay Disc
Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish and Ultimate Liquid Wax.
Some soap and pre-treat goodies from Dodo

Pretty much a shopping spree and a pretty straight forward product list I felt for her and even myself. My questions come in the pads. I've been told by numerous people to utilize UC with the 8006, followed by the UP with the 7006 and finalizing with ULW via the W92079.

So what are the best methods for the pads? Example... I've read using UC with the W7006 instead of the burgundy. Also, a good friend of mine has said the ULW could be applied with the W7006 as well. Thanks for all the help ahead of time, just trying to get my bearings into the world of Meguiars.

The best/preferred way is UC with the 8006, followed by the UP with the 7006 and finalizing with ULW via the W92079.
But yes UC can be applied with W7006 Polishing pad too, BUT..... it depends on the condition of the paint. With the right experience one would come to know which one to use as per the condition of the paint. In your case, u might need to do the panel twice if u use yellow pad with UC, but as i said, it depends on the finish.

And as far as ULW is concerned, i personally don't think there is any point in using yellow pad for ULW. Because ULW doesn't have any abrasive in it, it behaves like a sealant, and creates a bonding of polymers over the finish; so working it against the paint finish with polishing pad would be illogical i suppose.

I might be off, but I think your pad numbers are backwards.

At any rate, you want the polishing pads to be the main pad for your UC. The Ult Polish can go polishing if there is a little correction needed, or Finishing if just shining things up. Then finishing pad for the wax.

I have been using the microfiber pads with UC and UP. This helps me use the least aggressive products and still get the results I want. I have had little success using the foam pads and end up spending more time with foam. The only foam pad I use now days is to apply #7 polish and sealer # 21 and then wax, using the finishing pads.

Yes, you have the pad numbers/descriptions a bit mixed up.

7xxx series is the cutting pads
8xxx series is the polishing pads
9xxx series is the finishing pads

If you're using the G110v2 and the W68DA backing plate that comes with it you should be using the Soft Buff 2.0 pad line (W8207 and W9207) as these are made specifically for use with that backing plate. You can use the same backing plate on the 7424XP but you'll notice quite a bit more power with the G110v2 than the XP, just so you know. Also, we don't really recommend using the 7xxx cutting pads with a DA because the foam is so aggressive that it has a strong tendency to haze paint. That haze can usually be fixed pretty quickly, but why create it in the first place if you don't have to?

Basically your liquid/pad/tool speed pairings would run along the following lines:
          • Primary defect removal: Ultimate Compound/W8xxx (yellow) pad/speed 5/moderate to heafy pressure
          • Finish polish or refining of surface: Ultimate Polish/W9xxx (black) pad/speed 4/light to moderate pressure
          • OPTION - light defect removal on softer paint: Ultimate Polish/W8xxx (yellow) pad/speed 4 to 5/moderate pressure
          • Waxing: Ultimate Wax/W9xxx (black) pad/speed 3/light pressure

            Apologies.

I was half asleep when typing that last night and I do indeed have the numbers mixed up. I ended up with a 7006 because my suppliers assistant recommended it over my LC Tangerines... which are fairly light on the cut. So it's possible he was just guessing as I myself have never used that range of Meguiars pads and only have LC and Sonus for comparison. Thanks for the heads up however, trying to make this as easy as a process as can be and a good learning process for us both. Went ahead and ordered some 8207's and thank you everyone for the help and insight.
