  • Filtering Water

Does anyone have any good ideas for water filtration? something simple that i can hook to the spigot then back flush and remove when done? Im thinking i could engineer some sort of sand filer, followed by a few Water fountain style filters, but I dont think it would flow enough, and would probably be cheesy. Id rather but something. What you guys got?

The RV department at WalMart has some hose connection style filters. Not sure how effective, nor the quantity of water they can handle. Might be efficient with a low volume high pressure washer.

Do you need a filter or a softener?

Just using regular soap, and some white vinegar in the rinse cycle has seemed to do well for me.

I just want a filter.. no softner. I have city water so the ph and chemicals are ok, but there is no telling what else is in it.

that auto geek filter is something like i was thinking. i have one that uses what looks like yarn for its filter media. it was actually for a parts washer, but i see no reason it wont work with plain H2o

Your city water might be hard? High calcium? sprinkle some water on a mirror or glass and let it dry. Sediment filter is for sediment and not minerals.

City water has nothing to do with the water you use for the car. I have city water and its horrible. Your best bet is using a water filtration system designed for car washing.

                    Re: Filtering Water

City water is somewhat filtered and chemicals added (chlorine) to make it safe for drinking.

                      Re: Filtering Water

thats what I was getting at. and we get a semi yearly printout with water analysis that shows all the levels. what it doesnt show though, is any sediment picked up in 30 miles of pipes, and thats what im worried about. That said, ill probably go with one of the water softerner/sediment filters just because its cheap and easy..

can anyone till me what the "DI" stands for in that build it your self filter? honestly that looks like over kill for me and probably wouldnlt flow enough to sheet the water off either.

by the way our water plant uses cloramine not clorine, (i think thats right i know its not clorine) and they dont use lime. The plant was part of a effort to reduce nitrogen levels in the local river and works in tandem with a sewage treament facitlity. and composting facility. They seperate the solid waste and mix it with organic waste collected and compost it. the seperated water is collected down stream after it has been prefiltered at the sewage plant and also meanders through a man made wetlands before it gets back to the river. then the water filtration system that intakes is supposed to be some new advanced stuff that doesnt use alot of chemicals... very fancy system they have here and it does work rather well. no fish kills since they started using it. (this town and a few up stream use the same system)

                        Re: Filtering Water

No it is not a overkill! DI = Deionized water. Wash you car with regular water,, get a garden sprayer (2gallon size) go to walmart or any store and buy 2 gallons Deionized water and do a final spray on the car. Like when you go through a car wash and you have a final rinse which is done with RO or DI water to leave the car spot free. If you think that a sediment filter will take care of your problems, save your money.

Yeah, you could always go with the first link Mark supplied, and just buy the sediment filter only.

You could wash with regular water and use DI for final rinse and blow dry with good leaf blower. That should leave you with spot free wash. If you use DI sparingly for rinse only it should last you a long time. There is no advantage to wash with DI.
