  • Swirl Removal Process w/ Meguiars G110v2 *Please critique*

    Hi All,

First time poster, long time lurker. Finally pulled the trigger and bought a G100v2 with some pads. Doing some research on polishes to buy. Was wondering if someone can critique my proposed process for swirl removal before I pull the trigger on these products? Specifically step 3... i was wondering if that is the correct product & pad to use, or if there was a better alternative.

Car: 2008 Infiniti, Dark Blue Color. Medium-Heavy Swirls

    Process (after wash/clay)

    Step 1:
    Product - M105
    Pad - Foam Cutting 6.5” W7006

    Step 2:
    Product - M205
    Pad - Foam Polishing 6.5” W8006

    Step 3
    Product - M-1716 (?)
    Pad - Foam Polishing 6.5” W8006 (?)

    Step 4
    Product - Meguiar’s NXT 2.0
    Pad - Foam Finishing 6.5” W9006

    Thanks in advance!

    Process (after wash/clay)

    Step 1:
    Product - M105
    Pad - Foam Cutting 6.5” W7006
In most cases, Ult. Compound will be the better choice, and you would want a polishing pad.

    Step 2:
    Product - M205
    Pad - Foam Polishing 6.5” W8006
    OK

    Step 3
    Product - M-1716 (?)
    Pad - Foam Polishing 6.5” W8006 (?)
Not sure which product M-1716 is? But in general, #205 is pretty hard to improve on. A pure polish may help a little, but hard to say.

    Step 4
    Product - Meguiar’s NXT 2.0
    Pad - Foam Finishing 6.5” W9006
2 thin coats is best of course.

The pads you want are the soft buff 2.0. Yellow and black pads. I would run Ultimate compund on the yellow and Ultimate Polish on the black. If you want to further improves the gloss you can pick up some M07 and run that on a black pad and then top with your choice of wax in two thin coats.

Thanks for the replies... just a few clarifying questions below.

When will it be appropriate to use the cutting pad? Also I was reading and please correct me if wrong, that ultimate compound does not cut as deep as 105. Is 105 too strong for what I'm looking to achieve, or would you recommend ult. compound regardless?

Hm unfortunately I already bought the pads mentioned above. Is there a tremendous difference between the ones bought and the 2.0 pads? Unfortunately I opened (heh, was too excited) the pads but havn't used them yet.

Thanks again for the responses... tips have been very helpful and learning a lot on this site.

The 2.0 pads are washable. Basically the velcro backing on yours could come loose if they get wet. Really just needs glued back on if it does, but still can be annoying. So just try to clean them by hand without soaking them.

As for the #105, it is much more of a rotary product, and can be a bit harder to use by DA. And the UC is not that much weaker, and easier to work, so most people usually end up doing better.

You dont usually use the cutting pad with the DA, again more of a rotary product. Like anything, there can be extreme cases, but we tend to stick with what is usually needed at first.

You can use the cutting pad and a MF bonnet to remove wax though.

If you're going to use M205 I would use it with a finishing pad, not polishing pad. The ultimate compound should have good results, so a polishing pad with M205 may distort the finish you achieved with the UC.

I don't want to steal the OP's thread but I just got a G100V2 but unsure of the process and pads.. I want to use it for swirl removal and waxing.. What pads do I need to buy and what product(s)?

I have some Swirl X and wax (NXT) but not sure if I need another product and what pads are for what.

              Thank you.

                  Just to update...

Used this process on the car:

                  Wash/Clay
                  Ultimate Compound w/ polishing pad
                  Ultimate Polish w/ finishing pad
                  Ultimate Wax w/ finishing pad

Overall, i would say 90% of the swirls were removed. Process took about 8-10 hours total. VERY satisfied with Meguiars!

Great and helpful tips on this forum

There was talk about glass polishing which uses a cutting pad. Here is one of the posts I saw.

                        • Mask window trim w/ blue tape. Add strip for 50/50 assessment.

                        • Work M04 to window using DW849 until product breaks down waterspots. You can actually see after 1-2 passes.
                        • Wipe off with mf.
                        • If all is well, continue to work entire window.
                        • Clean windows with D120 and mf.
                        • Take pictures here and there throughout process to document results to post online.
                        • I read a couple posts about glass polishing seems people have had great success.
