  • Optimum No Rinse (ONR) New 2012 Formula (v3) - Photo & Video Review!

Few weeks ago, Optimum Polymer Technologies (OPT) released a new version of their popular Optimum No Rinse Wash & Shine Car Wash Formula - popularly known as ONR. Some people call this new iteration v3, while some call it v4 - so to save the confusion, I will just call this the ONR 2012 Formula.

I have never used a rinse-less car wash system before, so I do not have much in terms of comparison - but this will serve as a stand-alone review of this car wash system. I live in an apartment, so I could not use any of the shampoos that require a hose pipe with several gallons of water. The drive-by car washes make me very uncomfortable since I do not know what detergent and brushes are used, and whether they could marr the paint. While I reside in North California and do not have to worry about snow & cold temperatures, a rinseless wash could be used in such conditions too.

The Rinse-less car washes are perfect for these kind of situations - you need very little water - under 2 gallons to wash a typical sedan. These systems are not suitable for very filthy dirty cars, but they are perfect if your car has some dirt and you want to wash it regularly. Additionally, the polymers in ONR adds shine to the car.

Without further ado, here is the review of ONR 2012 Formula on a dirty black Nissan Altima.

    MY SETUP:
2 Buckets (1 with clear fresh water, 1 with 1 oz ONR solution mixed in 2 gallons of water), pre-mixed ONR solution for pre-rinsing (1 oz mixed in 32 oz of water), Grout Sponge (bought from Home Depot), and Microfiber Towels.

    BEFORE PICTURES
Several water marks, bird bombs, pollen, dust, etc on this 2012 Nissan Altima

    DURING WASHING
ONR feels quite slick on the surface. I pre-rinse the panel that I am about to wash by spraying some ONR+water solution, then use the grout sponge to wash in straight lines. Once done, I rinse the sponge, and go over the panel a second time using the other side of the sponge. Finally, I use a Microfiber towel to dry the panel. If there is some water left behind, I use another microfiber towel to go dry again. You can see the process in the video below.

It's always best to go from the top-most part and work your way lower as you clean the car. I divided the car into several "panels" to effectively wash it. First, I did one half of the top, then the other half. Then I finished all the windows, followed by the hood, front bumper, trunk, door panels, and the remaining lower panels. Finally, I finished with the door jams. I did not do the tires - will leave that for next week.

The sponge did have some dirt it picked up, but that did not affect the slickness, nor caused any marring.

    AFTER PICTURES

ONR cleans really well. In fact, the car as clean as when I bought it new, if not more.

Thank you for the very nice review and thanks Meguiars for kindly providing the community platform for information exchange on products from a competitor!

    a couple of questions:
    1. does ur sponge rinse clean afterwards?
    2. it seems to leave streaks, is that easily wiped off?
    3. does ONR3 leave ur paint slick or glossy? add anything to beading / sheeting?

    Thanks again for the effort.

      Thanks PPLD.
      1. I had covered this in the review. The sponge did pick some color/dirt, but that did not affect the slickness, nor caused any marring on the paint. Also, after a few rinsing in clear water, the dirt in the sponge seems to loosen up. A grit guard would definitely help here.
      2. I did not see any streaks at all. I am not sure where you saw them. I have an old camera, and the lighting condition was not ideal - so you may have mistaken some light reflection with streaking... but there was none - not even when I did the windows!
      3. This is the first time I used ONR, so its not easy to say. The car did seem clean and the color seemed deeper, but it might just be perception. There was definitely better water beading when using ONR - I had horrible beading when I took the car to a local self-service wash station.

Cool review. ONR seems like a good product and I don't know too much about it. I would recommend that you get a microfiber mitt to wash the car instead of that yellow sponge. Also, after you dry the car if you apply Ultimate Quik Wax it will take away any streak marks and give some shine and protection to the car.

I just used the new version the other day. Its a nice product for sure but rinseless washing is not my cup of tea.

            walletless,
I see some "cloudiness" on your paint in the photos of door (around the handle) and front fender.
I am not sure if thats streaks or reflections of something else in the background.
While rinseless wash is not for me, if you say the car is streak free in person then I will say ONR3 is an excellent product under testing circumstances (black car, cold etc).
I mainly use ONR as clay lube and quick interior cleaning/dusting.

              No worries.

Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that Meguiar's now offers a competitive product, D114 Rinse Free Express Wash. We decided to skip the inclusion of any glossers, polymer protection, etc in ours as we're targeting those who prefer to select their own wax/polymer protection, or those who are doing mobile work or working where water restrictions are in place, or those who intend to do some machine polishing following the wash.

Our Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere, which is a ready to use spray wash (more of a "waterless wash" rather than a "rinseless wash") is a great way to do much this same process, but it includes the same sort of polymer protection found in our Ultimate Quik Wax.

As for ONR, from personal experience I can tell you that I'm a fan of this product. In direct comparison of ONR, D114 and a few other similar products, (again, this is purely personal observations here - this is not an "official Meguiar's statement" so please keep that in mind!!!!) my two favorites, by far, are ONR and D114. Why? Cleaning ability, incredible slick feel when cleaning, and completely streak free drying. A couple of other products, and one in particular, were streak monsters and basically a pain to use compared to ONR and D114.

Those might be minor streaks - it is likely because my technique on using the drying towel was not correct. I will correct that next weekend and observe if I still see streaks. Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks. I considered the MF mitt, but given the heavy media staining, I am inclined to stick to the cheaper grout sponges for now, especially since I inspected the paint to ensure that it has not caused any marring. MF mitts will be good for Megs D114 though since it does not seem to leave the media stained like ONR does.

i use ONR with the Meguiars MF wash mitts all the time, even washing the "dirtier" parts of the cars (wheel wells) I can still wash my mitt and get it back to almost white.
They aren't really that expensive as a 6 pk of Megs MF wash mitts is only $20.95 at ADS
