Taping

First Thank you to all of you who respond to our questions. Thank you for
your professional advice and encouragement. In advance I apologize for what
might be stupid questions asked. I have found this form to be helpful,
encouraging and exciting. When taping off your vehicle prior to detailing, what
type of tape should one use? e.g.. blue painters tape. and is the purpose to
protect the plastic and trims from scratching? This is for the enjoyment of caring
for my own car.

The blue painters tape is a good choice.

There can be several reasons to do it.

- Keeping product off the black trim
- Protecting something delicate
- Keeping excess dust/product out of something
- Taping down newspaper, etc to cover larger areas like glass, grills, etc from dust/splatter

I tend not to do it much anymore for just my own car, but i did at first when learning. Dont seem to splatter as much now.

Agreed. But I personally like the 3M yellow tape ( for autobody work ) better since it stays better on surface. 3M green tape works excellent too, but pretty pricy.

I mainly use the Meguiar's (3M) brand tape now on 95% of my taping, for the reasons Murr stated above.

I also use 1/8" & 1/4" 3M fine line tape when wet sanding or aggressively polishing to protect sharp edges, while still getting nice and close to them. It's more expensive but a joy to work with.

I use the 3M green, bought it at Walmart & it's reasonable.

Varies per car, but here's a few more.







C5 that have about a dozen burns on the edges from previous detailer...Vettes have some very sharp edges where a user can rub through in seconds if they're not careful
