  • washing microfiber towels together?

    hey everyone,

was wondering, I use MF towels for my quick detailer, and also for waxing the car (with tech 2.0).

I also use terry cloth towels for Ultimate Compound or Paint Cleaner.

Can I wash these together in the washer along with my wash mitt and everything?

Won't the wax residues on the MF towels and compound and everything contaminate the wash mitt and terry cloth, and everything else in the washer?

The MF's together would be fine.

You generally want to keep the terry things separate.

Yeah, the MF's are all fine together. I would say to watch for any big bits stuck to your MF mitt though, and rinse/remove first, or just wash out by hand to really be safe. Depends what ends up on your mitt I suppose.

If you had a MF covered sponge, you may want to hand wash, otherwise the machine would break down the sponge faster. (This is what I do.)

Warm water, laundry detergent and the agitation provided by the washing machine will do a great job of breaking down the wax, paint cleaners, compounds, etc and washing them out of the microfibers, foam pads, etc. Some synthetic polymer sealants will be harder to fully wash out, but "contamination" shouldn't really be an issue. You can always add a bit of distilled white vinegar to your final rinse if you're really concerned. But both here at work and personally at home, pads, wash mitts, drying towels and microfiber towels get washed together all the time.

As Mat points out, however, you never want to wash terry cloth towels with microfibers. The terry cloth will lint off quite badly and the microfiber towels will become an instant lint trap. And good luck ever getting all that terry cloth lint out of the microfiber.
