Re: Does Consumer Clay Take Wax Off?

Ultimate Polish alone may or may not remove all the sealant. That will depend on how durable the sealant is, and how you apply the UP. Since you've got a fairly fresh coat of sealant on the car, and especially if you plan on claying first, then a moderate machine application of UP should take off the balance pretty easily. If you don't clay and use UP by hand only, then depending on how vigorously you apply it you should remove the bulk of the sealant. Can anyone say with any absolute confidence that either step will remove every trace of the sealant? No, but the paint should be sufficiently clean after either of these process that you needn't worry at all about a subsequent fresh coat of sealant.

I keep failing to mention things. I will be using a DA with the yellow polishing pad for the UP. From the information you have given me, it would be best that i go ahead and claybar the car and use UP. This will ensure that i have removed almost all of the sealant and add some gloss. I thank everyone for their replies and information.

No problem, and in a way it's sort of fitting: your screen name here is Redefined and you keep redefining things! (yes, that's a small joke, just having some fun with you)

OK, if you're to clay and use UP with a yellow foam polishing pad on a DA you'll get all the sealant off, no problem. Heck, the mechanical action of the pad will do a bunch of the work, almost regardless what liquid you have on it.

I don`t know about redefining things but i do try and find ways to make my job a little easier.

I decided to go ahead and compound the car while i was at it. I will be posting a thread of my finished product on another thread.

What about a simple IPA wipedown? Wouldn't that strip the wax?

I do not use IPA. The thought of alcohol on my paint does not sit well with me. The same goes for things like dawn dish soap. I believe both of these dry out your paint. To each his own, of course.

What pre-wax cleaners do you recommend?

That would be like SwirlX, UC, UP, or the pro line equivalents.

Oh, I had thought you meant something else. I guess my terminology is a little off.

Different companies use different terms, which doesnt help either.

You can also get stronger washes from other companies that remove wax, oils, etc.

But Meguiars goes with a paint cleaner for removing wax.

I have used Chemical Guys Citrus Wash, it's pretty affordable and it's a very strong cleaner, but still gentle enough not to dry out rubber trim and the like. It's good to have on hand when working on very filthy cars, or cars you want to "start over" on.

Meguiar's had a Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner, but I don't think that's available in the US anymore (we still have it here though). Shame, as it was nice to have a functionally non-abrasive paint cleaner (I believe that products like Swirl-X and Ultimate Polish both cut more than the Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner). Hope I won't get crucified for saying this, but I usually use Klasse All In One as my pre-wax step; it's a very good chemical cleaner with a small bit of acrylic sealant added. If you'd prefer a pure cleaner (no protection included, no abrasives), I've heard good things about Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion.

I have a bottle of DC1 and DC2 polish, but I find that UP performs as well as both products and is perfect for removing any wax left after washing and claying, without being too abrasive.

I agree. After using UP for the first time the other day, I have to say its a good product with light cut. It would work perfectly after claying. It also has a very long work in time. Some may or may not like this.
