  • How to clean car engine properly

    Hi there everyone

I want to ask, how do you normally clean the car engine, without damaging the electrical stuff on the engine?

Do i need to wrap the electrical part before wetting down the engine?

As I show on Meguiars video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGXMPtMtGs8

    T
he guy didn't actually wrap the parts and just start hosing down the engine

    Thanks

A lot of modern cars, like the one shown in that video, have almost everything covered up with a plastic cover of some sort, or bits and pieces are safely tucked away in covered boxes. Those are very easy to clean with very little preparation, but older cars can pose some issues if you don't take some precautions first. A little bit of plastic wrap is a good idea to cover fuse boxes, alternators (or actual generators on some older cars) distributor caps, ignition coils, and other sensitive electrical parts and connections that used to just sit out in the open back in the day. It's also a good idea to use just a light stream of water rather than blasting everything with a nozzle on the hose - let the cleaner and a brush or some old towels do the cleaning and then simply rinse it off.

I find if the engine is not covered in gunk, you can achieve great results without spraying water everywhere. A simple wipe down (sponge + tiny bit of car wash and water first depending on how dusty/ dirty or simply old MF towels with QD), dress the plastics and rubber with gold class trim detailer, color X any painted parts (I find cleaner waxes work best under the hood), polish any uncoated metal components with NXT metal polysh. Here is mine following this procedure:
