I just bought a new car and was wondering what would be the best type of wax to use for the first time?

Re: new car
I would recomend this:
1. Wash - Gold Class soap, 2 buckets, Grit guards, good towels, etc.
2. Clay - Smooth Surface Clay kit
3. ColorX
4. Wax - Ult. Wax or Nxt 2.0 will be most durable.
5. Maintain -Ult. Quick Wax is good after future washes.2017 Subaru WRX Premium - WR Blue

Re: new car
Well, yeah maybe... but there are a lot of variables, so kind of being safe:
- 2 coats of wax is recomended, so as ColorX is a cleaner/wax, no time wasted, and able to cover all the steps - (wash, clay, clean, polish, wax, wax). If it wasnt needed, no time lost.
- Clay removes bonded on surface contaminants. It is safe to say if you think the car has been exposed to things that have bonded on, then there is also probably dirt in the pores/imperfections that can be removed. A car could sit on a lot by a highway, etc for weeks. After being shipped by truck, rail, train, boat from a factory. Where it sat outside for days/weeks. So again, chance for dirt on the surface.
- You may want to remove any wax, etc the dealer used.
And of course all this assumes the the dealers, etc who had the car didnt wash/detail it themselves, and swirl/scratch it all up, at which point other products/techniques would be needed.2017 Subaru WRX Premium - WR Blue

Re: new car
Meguiars states its Ultimate Wax is the most durable, longest lasting: Its their most advanced hydrophobic wax!
I think that says it all.
The steps: of wash, clay, sealant/wax are solid. If you were doint something like Opti-Coat, than the paint would have to be perfect and more steps and products would be necessary. (Take a close look at the paint; hopefully there wont be any scratches or swirls, if there is you might want to think about some light correction).
I find that keeping it fun and simple enhances the love of detailing ..have fun!
