  • Help! Clear coat line.

So I bought this used car and there was a dent in the door. Well, I had the seller fix it before I bought it. The body shop blended the rear panel but didn't take the fender well trim off before doing so! I removed the trim because I don't like it. Now there is a clear coat line left. How do I remove this? Is this something I can do or do I need a body shop to fix it?

You can see where I scraped the excess off with a finger nail in two spots. But there is still a line there, just can't see it very well in the pic.

    Thanks.

Welcome to MOL! We would be able to give you a bit better advice if you could snap a couple more pictures in focus. As it looks right now, you do not have any paint on the "line," but it's hard to tell.

    Thanks!

That's about the best pic I'm able to get as of right now. The dark line is dirt and adhesive from the trim. You can see in the two clean spots where the fine clear line is.

Imagine this. You put a piece of tape on your paint and clear over it. Remove the tape and you're left with an edge that is uneven with the rest of the paint.

Maybe I could wet sand it out?

If you have experience wet sanding and using a buffer, that would be great. If you don't, we wouldn't recommend it, especially because of where that line is. You could burn the edge very easily and then would have to repaint the bumper. Let's see if we can get a better picture and then go from there.

I would try buffing it out by hand with some cleaner wax first, then if that doesn't work, I would try some Ultimate Compound by hand. If that doesn't work, I'd wetsand with 1500 or 2000, then polish it out with rubbing compound and then UC.
