  • How to polish? (by hand)

I've never actually polished a car so I'm not really sure how to do it. I assume it is like using ultimate compound? Do you work in a small area in a circular motion and wipe the product off right before it gets dry? Any tips, or tricks of the trade would be appreciated! I've looked for a video or FAQ post about it but couldnt find one. If you know of a good video please post a link.

When you say polish, do you mean using a pure polish?

The product that I have is Ultimate Polish, I don't believe it is a pure polish. I should have mentioned that.

Use your Ultimate polish to remove small swirls and it will remove any waxes you have. I would suggest doing a small area like trunk and work it aggressively with foam pad. Wipe it clean with microfiber towel before it dries on you. When all done use your favorite wax. Just my 2 cents worth.

Dont need to be agressive if not worrying about removing swirls.

Then why would you polish? just laying polish on and wiping it it off does nothing. Now, if he used UC then he needs to put some elbow grease (by hand) with UP to remove any small imperfections and haze left by UC. That's what I would do, but again I am not a PRO.

Well, gets a bit tied up in the terminology, but...

The Ult. Polish, or other cleaner/polish, will have cleaners and polishing oil.

So applying one gently (a little working in) would just work on removing the dirt, and getting the polishing oils onto the paint.

Some people will call removing swirls polishing, some will call removing dirt polishing, some will call adding polsihing oils polishing. So, can get a bit confusing.

I just did the full detailing job 2 weeks ago, using GC wash, clay, UC, DC Polish and UW.

After the UC, the car looks nice and shinny. I then applied the DC Polish but this product did not improve the car further much. This is because my car is silver and is well maintained. Also maybe UC is such a capable product that the polish step is no longer required. After completed the detailing job with 2 coats of UW, the car looked great.

So, depends on the color of your car, you may not need a separate polish step.

UC is a very good product and on many cars, especially lighter colored cars, polishing after UC really isn't going to do much. I just did a wash/clay/UC/UP/NXT detail job on a lighter colored car and I really don't think there would be a noticeable difference after using Ultimate Polish. On a black car, I would say it would be worth your time.
