  • Traffic Marking Paint - Advice?

I washed the car and took some photos. Not sure if this is just traffic marking paint or a mixture of paint and reflective granules. It is all over the car, tires, rims, and glass. No clue how bad on the undercarriage.

Claying is a test of futility. A chemical intended for the removal of overspray was ineffective.

Have one more day to test ideas, then I'm returning it to the owner.

Claying produced grooves in the clay, but no paint removal.

My suggestion to the owner is take it to a body shop.

    Thanks,

That's a tough one. If you have a dual action polisher try various combos of pads and of polishes. Otherwise I'd try products like ScratX SwirlX or Ultimate Compound. Remembering to use the least invasive method possible. As for the wheel wells try all purpose cleaner and different dilutions. I'm not sure if paint thinner would be a good idea or acetone. Maybe try using non acetone nail polish remover on the wheel wells but not on the paint.

I'd also tell the owner to use more caution next time as that looks quite bad. No offense but there is a reason why they put up the big wet paint signs and what not.

Wheels, wheel wells and lower rocker panels all sprayed with All Purpose Cleaner Plus and brushed with a solution of Gold Class. Then entire car high pressure rinsed. Wheels, wheel wells and lower rocker panels sprayed with APC+ again and bug collection on front bumper sprayed with APC+. Entire car foamed with Super Soap and hand washed with Gold Class. High pressure rinsed again, foamed again and rinsed again. Hand dried.

APC+ had no effect on traffic marking paint.

My fear of using a DA is having granules break loose get caught in pad and further damage finish with scratches and swirls.

Owner's son was driving car and indicated there were NO wet paint signs or any crews near wet paint. Didn't realize problem until got home.

Interesting. I would try the nail polish remover and a brush. And as far as the DA very valid point. Maybe if it comes off then switch pads and polish the swirls out. Just a thought.

Happened to me as well 2 months ago (white dots instead of yellow).

I tried paint thinner and all my Meguiars cleaning product, all failed. I then used an ice scraper and it worked.
All the white dots came out on the painted surfaces easily, probably because my car was well-waxed.
Not so easy for the wheel wells because of all the curves. With patient and hard work, I did manage to remove most of them.

              That does look pretty bad.

I would maybe try the pressure washer again but use it closely in the wheel wells and see if it dislodges it.

I would also try some Tarminator and see how that works.

Re: Traffic Marking Paint - Advice?

wow that is horrible, looks like some strong stuff will be needed. I would not fear using a DA or Rotory on the regular surface as long as it is prepped. I wonder if some stronger solvent and a plastic razor to scrape the wheel well would work better.

The point is to use the least aggressive as possible but looks like most product are not going to just "melt" it away, especially since clay is having little or no effect. To me it looks like it needs friction/heat for it to come off.

Re: Traffic Marking Paint - Advice?

There are several types of Road Surface Marking.......Paint, Thermo plastic and epoxies.....

Try some degreaser (the nasty cheap type)..........let it dwell.........Reapply........Scrape.......Reapply......Scrape.......

Is going to take you several tries........You will not get that off at once.......But you get it off.

                  Good luck.........

For wheel wells, I managed to get most of them off. My plan-B (never executed) was to buy some matte-black spray paint to paint it over.

Please note that it happened at noon and I took care of it at early evening. I would think that the longer it stays, the harder it is to remove.

hey people!! when i come across a vehicle with paint, i first try paint thinner, and that usually works. once you use the paint thinner, you're gonna have to compound the car, because it will leave white spots on the vehicle. goodluck!!

Paint thinner will remove tar but not yellow marking paint. Try a test spot with Lacquer thinner.
