  • Ultimate Black

Well I recently attended my 4th Thursday evening class
I have enjoyed each of the classes alot

    I have a 1993 BMW 325i

At the Thursday evening class I applied Meguiars Ultimate Black to the following pieces
front bumper,B pillars, mirror trim, and rear bumper

^^ that was my first time using Ultimate Black

Before this I had always used Stinger Chemicals spray detailer in an aerosol can from my old dealership but that recently ended

The product went on smoothly and seemed to work great
On I believe it was Saturday evening Orange County got some rain and I woke up kinda late that day to my horror the Ultimate Black spotted up really bad

It was very obvious what had been treated with Ultimate Black due to the water spots

Is that normal for Ultimate Black?
Did I possibly screw up using the product?
Any thoughts and suggestions are welcomed

    Thank you for your help

    Any pictures of the "spotting"?

Really??? I just bought some Ultimate Black and Ultimate Protectant and now I'm kinda leery about using them. Normally I use M40 for dressing plastics on the outside and when it does rain normally it will start to fade, but never spot up!!!! I will be checking back on this posting and see what everyone else says(i haven't opened the bottles of Ultimate Black and Ultimate Protectant yet and i still have the receipt. . . .just in case).

      Re: Ultimate Black

Ultimate Black (essentially Ultimate Protectant renamed) is a water based, polymer fortified dressing that will bond to plastic trim in much the same way a sealant bonds to paint. But in order for that to happen the surface needs to be completely clean of any previous dressings, polymers, etc. in order for the polymers in Ultimate Black to bond properly. We suspect that's what you're seeing here. When used on badly weathered, gray looking black plastics it does a fantastic job of rejuvenating the finish, cleaning it up, and then lasting through multiple washings and/or rain falls.

We would suggest either deep cleaning these trim pieces (glass cleaner actually works quite well) before applying Ultimate Black again, or switching over to our new Vinyl & Plastic Coating now that it's available.

Thank you Michael for the quick response
Ok it looks like I definitely missed one of the crucial steps when applying Ultimate Black

My plastics were most definitely dressed they had several layers of the Stinger product
It looks like this was a case of Error operator

Mike I was wondering if you could suggest a good local store that has a large selection of the Meguiars product line
        I am also in Irvine
If possible it would be great to buy directly though the Irvine location
        Im looking for the following

and either Ultimate Protect or Ultimate Black

You can pick up the endurance gel in your local walmart.

As for the water magnet, your best bet would be to go to the store front of Detailing.com. Their address is:
          15801 Rockfield Blvd., Ste. A
          Irvine, CA 92618

You can probably get everything Meguiar's related there including the detailer and professional line.

Marc thank you so much for that lead
            that looks perfect

Its close to my house 7.5miles and has a huge selection of supplies

Well I have discovered it looks like there are many options that appear to be doing the same idea in the same form

Meguiar's Ultimate Black restores color and shine to faded surfaces. Quick drying formula produces a streak-free finish. Ultimate Black cures like a wax on nonporous surfaces. Use on interior & exterior plastic and vinyl surfaces. Unmatched protection & durability. Uses state of the art hybrid polymer technology. Protection & shine lasts weeks! Innovative UV clear coat technology Great on black or grey exterior trim. Won’t streak in rain!

what makes Ultimate Protectant over $4 better than Trim Detailer

Trim Detailer is a high quality water based dressing that can do wonders for making faded black plastic almost new again. But since it's a pretty straightforward water based dressing it's going to come off in a heavy rain or thorough washing. If you took an old, faded bit of black plastic/vinyl trim and applied Trim Detailer to one half and Ultimate Protectant to the other half and then let it sit out in the rain and/or washed it very thoroughly, the UP side would still look great while the TD side would have lost a noticeable amount of the darkness and sheen previously restored.

Keep in mind the above scenario assumes a piece of trim that does not already have a heavy load of polymers or solvent based dressing already applied to it. Those products (and this includes Ultimate Quik Wax for those of you who have used that on trim) will get down into the pores of the vinyl/plastic and prevent the polymers in UP from bonding.

Well I headed down to Detailing.com's store front today

Endurance continues to be a favorite among enthusiasts looking for extra long lasting performance with a great look. Our unique formulations stop tires from turning brown and eliminate the mess of overspray, drips, streaks and spotted driveways. 16 oz. High Gloss Gel.

Meguiar's Ultra Plush Water Magnet reduces drying time with less wring-outs by absorbing up to two times the water of traditional terry towels. The extra large 22 x 30 waffle texture wrings out easily and leaves a spot-free finish. X2000 Single pack.

                  Re: Ultimate Black

Yes, I am revisiting this thread!!! Okay, I did a light detail of my truck yesterday and before I started I went out and got a bottle of Ultimate Black(called up Meguiar's and they told me this was the stuff to get for dressing faded plastic and that it will last) to try and bring some life back to the plastic piece's on my 2003 Ram 1500(yeah its got a Hemi ). So I sprayed some APC+ on the mirrors(test spot choice), scrubbed them real well and rinsed of and repeated and then hand dried the mirrors and then came back about 30 minutes later and applied the UB. I was thoroughly impressed. . . . . . .until I saw this. . . .

So what did I do wrong or is this common for UB to do this???? I thoroughly cleaned the plastic with APC+(and no, i did not let it dry), rinsed, hand dried and then then let the sun dry the rest, applied the UB kinda thick and then came back and rubbed in the access real well!! The streaking was just from the dew last night!! Any tips or idea's would be greatly appreciated!!

It would appear that you applied it to thick and it hadn't had a chance to thoroughly absorb into the mirrors. Because it looks like the dew just removed everything that hadn't absorbed in. Not sure what they looked like when you started but if they were really bad, you could 2 or 3 really thins coats. With Ulitmate Black less is certainly more!
