  • applying Trim protectant , how/when do you do it?

I just want to get some opinions on how and when to apply the trim protectant. I always seem to have problems no matter what I do.
1 - If I apply it last, using a applicator pad or a cloth, I get it on the windows or paint and then have to go back and clean those areas again. The applicator pad works best but I still have problems.
2 - If I apply it first, then I clean the windows and polish /wax, I always end up taking some of the protectant off and have to retreat it and then procede to get it on the windows / paint which leads back to #1.

I have similiar problems when doing the interior.

Any other ways to do this?

    Thanks,
    Gary

    Hi russell336,

This is an age old problem and a common dilemma in the detailing world. There is no easy solution. The best thing to do is to slow down and be real careful, this saves time because then you hopefully have less clean up.

Another alternative that I use is to tape off trim before polishing and waxing, then after polishing and waxing, remove the tape and dress the trim. A good quality microfiber will remove any excess dressing product from freshly waxed paint with ease.

I do it after I polish/wax and so on. I like to use a foam applicator pad, seem that I have much more control over the product. If you fold the pad in half you can slowly go along the edge of the trim and get little to no dressing on the paint. Ii use #38 or Gold Class trim detailer. Then as mike said wipe of the excess.

I spray a little protectant into a ziploc bag (or similar item) and dip a Q-tip in it. Works well for me.

MF towels to clean up excess, of course.
