  • Lots of stuff on car not coming off from wash alone

    Hi guys,

Just washed my car for the first time in maybe 2 years. I know I neglected it and I am trying to make get her back in better shape and then maintain it. So I did 2 washes today and now here are some pictures of what is left (most is on the hood and roof of course). Sorry the pictures aren't better but I couldn't find my regular camera.

    Thanks.

Kind of tough to say from those images, but it looks like you've either got a lot of staining in the paint or the clear is starting to fail. If this is the first time you've washed in two years (ouch!) then odds are you at least have a ton of bonded contaminants and will need to clay the car before doing anything else. That will remove the bonded contaminants and smooth out the surface of the paint. Then a paint cleaner like Ultimate Compound will be needed to address issues below the surface; things like stains, fine scratches, swirls, etc.

But if that's clear coat failure starting, you could be in real trouble. There is only one way to correct clear coat failure, and that's to repaint.

Look through The Clearcoat Failure Photo Archive and see if any of those images look like what you're facing on your car.

So it too a while for my post to show up (3 days!) and I decided to take things into my own hands. Lots and lots of things have come off with many hours of claying (I am actually not done yet) and things are starting to shine. Fortunately I do not have clear coat failure. My car definitely doesn't look like the pictures. I am pretty sure I have paint staining so I am going to try some scratch x or ultimate compound on it next.

Some of the sap seems to be a orangish brown/yellow color and some of that has bled into the clear coat or paint. Will that come out? So far things look really promising and I am looking forward to being able to maintain.

      Thanks!

Using a paint cleaner right should remove it if it is not set in too deep into the surface. So, ya, I would think so.

Thanks for the update, Greg. Nice to know it's not a clear coat failure situation - the staining may take some work to get out but with Ultimate Compound you should be able to.
