  • Rubbing Compound

My friend will attempt to repair some paint damage of his bumpers (front and back corners). He went to a paint shop and ordered the primer and paint in spray cans.

The paint shop suggested that after the paint and the clear coat, he should use Meguaires rubbing compound to blend in the paint with the surroundings.

    We have a few questions:
    1. After applying the primer, how long should he wait to apply the paint?
    2. After the paint, how long should he wait to apply the clear coat?
    3. After the clear coat, how long should he wait to apply the rubbing compound?
    3. Can SwirlX be used as rubbing compound?

    Please help.

    1. See your coating manufacturer's data sheet.
    2. ditto
    3. ditto, ditto
3? SwirlX is much less aggressive than Rubbing Compound.

The prima and paint will come in spray bottles. I doubt if they would have instructions or any labels.

I have stopped asking questions to the body shop. During a discussion with a body shop manager after a paint job, he actually told me that I could wax the new painted panel after 7 days. I then asked another manager from a different body shop, this one replied 10 days. These guys have no concept of "Degassing".

Let me ask the questions differently, in general, how long are the wait times between steps? 15 minutes? Hours?

I asked about SwirlX because SwirlX is a product that I use often, not rubbing compound. Hate to buy it and use only once.

There is no such thing as "in general" for re-coat/next-coat of paints. There are too many different paint companies and formulations.

All paint manufacturers have instructions available. It's normal for the paint supply shop to keep them around but you usually have to ask since most of their customers buy the same stuff over and over and don't need new copies every time.

You can get instructions off the internet too. You just need to know the manufacturer and specific product name for each.

Whether SwirlX might work or not depends on how much correction is required and how workable the paint is. If you have SwirlX lying around you can try it. Just don't be surprised if you need something more aggressive.

And don't use SwirlX in between coats. Only use it on the very top coat. It isn't paintable.

          Re: Rubbing Compound

My friend asked the guy when he picked up the paint. The guy said not long between coats, 20 minutes or so.
