  • Just switched to Megs. Will a polish help?

I just used the paint restoration kit on my 2003 Honda Civic (radiant ruby pearl). I am very pleased with the results.

I have always used NuFinish (past 3 years). I was always happy with it, but I just wanted more. I liked the deep glossy look that NuFinish gave. It made the paint a lot darker.

I have always heard good things about Meguiars so I decided to give it a try. I got the paint restoration kit and NXT 2.0. I did the usual wash, then I used the UC (I just clayed a month ago). I was very impressed. The UC got out most of the swirl marks and helped a lot with the door handle scratches. Then I waxed with the NXT 2.0, and topped that with the GC wax. My paint is really clear ,but it just doesn't pop like it did with the NuFinish.

    So my questions are:
    1. Will a layer of polish before the NXT 2.0 bring back this deep shine and make my paint look darker?
    2. Should I use the UP or the NuFinish? I have half a bottle of the NuFinish and don't want to spend $10 on UP if I don't have to.
    3. Can you even layer NuFinish and NXT 2.0?

P.S. I do all work by hand.

UC tends to haze the paint, I would definitely recommend using a polish before applying a wax. Try Ultimate Polish and then Ultimate Wax. The Ultimate Wax has a record of really deepening colors and bringing out the richness.

      NuFinish is a cleaner/wax.

You will see it is popular on here to use a cleaner/wax followed by a regular wax as part of a quick detail. So you could use both next time.

Since you shouldnt need UC every time (something is wrong if you do), a lighter cleaner would be fine. So something like:

      1. Wash
      2. Clay if needed
      3. Clean - Ult. Polish
      4. Wax
      5. Wax

      or:

      1. Wash
      2. Clay if needed
      3. a cleaner/wax
      4. Wax

Ok. Thanks for the help. The paint isn't really hazed, it just doesn't look as dark or pop like it used to. Next time I will wash, clay, Nufinish, NXT, NXT. I want to use the rest of the NuFinish before I buy some UP.

Another quick question. Should I use Dawn to to take off all the wax next time I wash to start from a clean slate?

Meguiars tends to recomend 2 coats fo wax, but you can do 3 if you like. NuFinish would be the first coat of wax.

No need for Dawn. Using something like Nu Finish or Ult. Polish (or other cleaner/wax) that has a cleaning ability will be all you need.

Forget the NuFinish. Use Megs Ultimate Polish after the UC. It combines the properties of a polish and a glaze. Not a big fan of NXT2; I'm using Chemical Guys EZ glaze and BlackFire Wet Diamond as a LSP.

I will get the Ultimate Polish then.

How often is it safe to use the UC? If I use it too much can it damage the clear coat?

they said if you detail your car with right method, using UC for whole car will be once in a lifetime

yes, even UC is actually a really save product, if you use it too often, it can remove your clear coat...( like every month using rotary will eat your clear coat in no time )

if you don't have heavy swirl, SwirlX will basicly do the job really good...
always start with the mildest product, and always try with second application before you jump to more agresive product.. ( at least that what i do )

                Happy detailing
