  • 2010 Toyota Venza - Delicate paint project.

I joined here early April, I'm still new to detailing/polishing. (1st thread on practicing is here)

I bought this Venza end of Feb of this year. It had 400 miles, so probably had a few dealer washes. But for me I've only hand washed or touchless so far.

    [/QUOTE]

Had some time this Saturday to wash it, so when clouds broke and low evening light caught it, all these swirls just popped!
(Cell phone shot since sun was in and out and didn't want to miss it)

    Closer up

Ran out of daylight, so here is a reflection off a 500W halogen.

What scares me is how careful I've been with the new car and still looks like a mess just two months old.
I have a feeling this is a soft clear coat - which might be good for easy correction, but bad because it will need regular correction!

I'm not comfortable taking the rotary to the Venza yet, so this project will be mainly D/A hand work.
I set up a test with 3 products I had, M205, Scratch X2.0 and Ultimate Compound. Do you think I should add SwirlX to the test?

I just used 3 new MF applicator pads for the hand test, results were o.k. removing swirls, with UC and 205 being close, (That was confusing somewhat because I though 205 was the least aggressive), and ScratchX 2.0 doing the least.
205 had no haze, UC with better correction, just a slight touch of haze. ...

Most aggressive to least aggressive -->

    Then I hit the door with UC/ P.C. DA 7424XP / W9006 finishing pad / Speed 5.

Didn't get all the swirls, even after a few tries.
I'm guessing it needs a 8xxx polishing pad. I'll have one this week.
    Plan is UC 8006 / then M205/ 9006, hand rub where I can't get the D/A.

Busy work week, so probably be a few days for an update.

    Sounds like a good plan!

Adding Swirlx is really up to you. It has a little more cut than 205 in my experience but nothing too significant.

This really isn't surprising, given that you were applying by hand here. M205, being pretty rich in polishing oils, may have been hiding some of the finer defects making it appear as though it was working almost as effectively as Ultimate Compound. It also explains why it exhibited less haze than UC. On fairly delicate paints it's fairly common for UC to haze a bit, especially with hand application. This is partly due to the pressure points generated by your fingers pushing through the applicator pad coupled with the aggressiveness of UC - some delicate paints respond to that combination by hazing a bit. But if you remove all the defects in the process of leaving a light haze, then a quick follow up with M205 or even Ultimate Polish should remove that haze easily.

Yes, it's the finishing pad that's holding you back here. By using the DA you're likely to get less, or almost no, haze with the same UC that hazed a bit via hand application. But using a finishing pad paired with UC is going to dramatically reduce you're cutting ability so removal of swirls, even on fairly delicate paint, is going to be a challenge with this combo. Speed 5 is great, but don't be afraid to put some pressure down on the pad. Just the weight of the tool isn't going to get you the results you're looking for. The DA requires very different technique from what you may be used to on the rotary, and that pressure is chief among those differences. Where pressure on a rotary can be dangerous at best, catastrophic at worst, it's essential with a DA for defect removal.

I would start off on SwirlX on a polishing pad and see where that gets you. Im thinking UC right off the bat will be too aggressive for the minor swirling you have. Depending on how soft the paint is and how you work SwirlX you might be able to get all the swirls out and finish with SwirlX without the need for M205 on a finishing pad.

That part I got - I put a sharpie mark to watch the rotation and what pressure it takes to stop it.

Last night I set up some tests on the hood.
          - UC 8006 pad, about 6 section passes, DA on speed 5.
Didn't get it all, second try almost got the scratches.

to speed it up, tried a little more horsepower: M105, 8xxx pad, 1200rpm on the rotary. Got the swirls out fast, but hologram city! That freaked me out, so I put away the rotary.

          Settled on just DA work:
          UC / 8006 2 Tries, speed 5
          M205 / 8006 to clear up haze
          Ult polish 9006 speed 4
          NXT 2.0

Looks great, will finish in a few days and get some pics!

This combination should look great on that red car. Can't wait to see your final photos. I haven't used NXT hardly at all, but those other three will work wonders and they work so easily too.

Not done yet, slow going, with only a few hours here and there to play in the garage.
It's rained every day all week, so it's stayed in the garage.
I'm itching to drive it, but don't want have to wash again.

Making great progress, then one bad wipe and I see a new scratch in the exact direction of my hand.
I work hard to get them out, but sooooo easy to put them back in!!

I'm working very clean, I have a pile of just washed MF in a closed storage tote, every panel/door gets a new one. Dirty ones go in a clean bucket not to contaminate.

Nothing touches the floor, yet scratches show up if I just fart.

I think I have magic insects that drop diamond dust. Argh!

                Kubbie,

As a matter of discretion it hasn't been discussed much here, but when breaking wind near a delicate paint it's prudent to face the car....

                    Done, I'm happy.
Best I could with my skills for now.
Orange peel might be holding back some of the wet look also.

She's right! Nice job on the whole car. From what we see it looks like you whipped that delicate paint into great shape.
