  • Layering NXT Tech Wax: Even Application and/or Added Gloss and Depth

I read A LOT of threads about layering NXT and learned four things. As I understand it, Meguiars stand on layering is to ensure even application, and added coats of their LSP's do not necessarily add protection. (Correct me if I am wrong) As far as curing time is concerned, the consensus is waiting for 12 hours so that NXT, a sealant, can bond to the paint. Majority also attest that applying additional coat(s) of NXT increases gloss and depth. Finally, the law on diminishing returns applies, thus 3 coats of NXT is enough.

I am asking this question because my new paint (respray) will cure soon, and I will use NXT as LSP and I am now planning on how to apply it. I will share my plan based on the above information, and please tell me if my intention is a bit of overkill.

    1) After washing and claying, I will clean the paint with Meguiars Clear Coat Safe Polishing Compound. (The new paint has light imperfection but I do not intend to do a correction by hand. I'll wait until I receive my DA on June or July. Hence, a light paint cleaner to prep the surface).

2.) Wipe 15% IPA solution to make sure that the polishing compound is removed.

3). I will apply Meguiars Deep Crystal System Polish for added gloss and depth. I think its oils may also hide the minor paint defects.

4.) Thinly apply Megs NXT Gen Tech Wax 2.0. Wait 15 minutes to do the swipe test, and remove the excess wax when it is dried.

5.) For even application, apply another coat of NXT Tech Wax 30 minutes after the first coat was removed.

6.) Wait 12 hours for the wax to cure and apply another coat of NXT Tech Wax for added gloss and depth.

I know that No. 5 may be a bit overkill but I just want to make sure of even application before letting the wax cure for another application. If I pass on No. 5, the "after 12 hours coat" might become a first coat on some areas. I hope it makes sense, but it applies the three things that I learned about layering of NXT - even application, 12 hours curing period and 3 coats at most. LOL

EDIT: I'm sorry. I posted the thread in a wrong forum. I hit the submit button before noticing it. I don't know how to delete it and make a new thread on Detailing 101.

    Yes.

12 is best.... less if you have to.

Majority also attest that applying additional coat(s) of NXT increases gloss and depth. Finally, the law on diminishing returns applies, thus 3 coats of NXT is enough.
Generally 2... 3 if you feel like it.

Sure, though Ultimate Polish may be a better choice...

2.) Wipe 15% IPA solution to make sure that the polishing compound is removed.
No need for this. You only use IPA to check if defects are removed with you current technique. If not removing defects, no need to remove the oils, etc.

3). I will apply Meguiars Deep Crystal System Polish for added gloss and depth. I think its oils may also hide the minor paint defects.
Well, if doing this, Ultimate Polish would not be needed... But I might side on the Ultimate Polish and not this.

Sure, you can do this. Or apply the first coat and then the 12 hour coat.

I know that No. 5 may be a bit overkill but I just want to make sure of even application before letting the wax cure for another application. If I pass on No. 5, the "after 12 hours coat" might become a first coat on some areas. Personal preference, whatever you like...

Re: Layering NXT Tech Wax: Even Application and/or Added Gloss and Depth

Thanks a lot Murr1525. Based on some reviews and its description, I really dig the ultimate polish. Unfortunately, I already bought the polishing compound as my light paint cleaner by hand. When I get my DA, I'll go with Ultimate Polish as my paint prep/final polish.

I already tried applying the NXT. It is easy to apply sparingly and thin so I think I can afford proceedings with No. 5, just to be sure. I am excited to see it on my car. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, the cleaners in the little pots are not for machine use.

But can always return the products if not used yet... unless bought online I guess, a hassle then.
