  • Clay bar problem.

I have clayed many vehicles, and have never had a problem until now.

(A year or so ago) In a pinch, I went to the local paint store and got some Clay magic-mild clay, for a truck that needed a more agressive clay bar step. The normal bars of Megs, weren't cutting it on this neglected truck. It worked fine for this one truck. Now these bars of clay are HUGE, so i divied it up into smaller pieces.

(Some months later) I tried it on an area of my car that gets nasty quick, and buddy let me tell you, it sort of looks like I lightly sanded the panel.

(Almost a year later) I just tried it on a pickup and it did the exact same thing. Is the clay too old? It has been stored in its plastic locking container since I have had it. My process has remained the same for years...and like I said, it did wonders on that 98 truck.

FYI, process, spray down liberal amounts of quik detailer, (even more so because I was trying to avoid this problem), clay, wipe dry..you get the idea.

Any ideas?? This truck will need an aggressive step too, it has overspray everywhere, OLD bugs, etc.

Also, it appears to clean up with 205.

Aggressive clay can leave paint surface hazed or micro-marred. You need to follow with paint cleaner/ cleaner polish to bring everything back to shine.

M205 is good to provide the muscle.

Thanks for the reply! As mentioned, I did notice it cleaned up with M205, I was just making sure this was normal or if I was as they say "doing it wrong".

Clay-Magic is available in different levels of aggressiveness. I have used some of their blue clay a number of years ago and it seemed to be only slightly more aggressive than Meguiar's standard clay.

The mild claybar you got from Clay Magic is a very aggressive clay bar, slightly more than Meguiars Red, so it is normal to see marring.

Is the megs mild a little less aggressive than clay magic on scaler terms?

Yikes, that is aggressive clay then!! Makes perfect sense that it would cause some marring on delicate paint as we fully expect that our C2100 red aggressive clay will do this.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will bring it down a notch then to megs blue.

                      Re: Clay bar problem.

Hello, I recently purchased Smooth Surface Clay Kit. I just gave it a try on a part of my car - I did a test spot. After use the clay had left a (blue-violet) haze on paint. I worked for the first time with clay, trying to work as I saw in Meguirs's Quick Tip videos.

The car was just washed, before claying (clay + QD) I had additionally cleaned the surface with NXT Speed detailer. The haze that was left after claying was then removed with NXT Speed detailer. It hardly vanished, I tried 2-3 times to wipe it off completely.
Maybe anyone has a clue what could have I done wrong? I wonder if I haven't used enough lubricant (QD)?
