  • Ultimate Polish looking cloudy?

So, I tried the Ultimate Polish and something went wrong while detailing our 2001 black Lexus. I washed, clayed, cleaned with Ulimate Compound and then to Ultimate Polish. I used the 9207 pad with first generation PC DA at speed 4 to 5 with multible passes. Rather than enhancing the glossy finish it became cloudy. My first thought was residue. So wiped it several times with the Meguire's microfiber towel but no good. Anyway, I cleared it up with more UC. Any ideas what I did wrong? Thanks.

I found that the Ultimate Polish worked better at speed 3 or 4 on my Griot's DA. I started with moderate pressure for the first pass or two then went over again with little to no pressure and the finish came out much better.

I have just used ultimate polish by hand and haven't had any issues at all. Applied with a yellow Meguiars foam pad.

I recall reading something in here that suggested misting it very lightly with water and going back over the area with a microfiber. I'd give that a shot before underatking re-doing it.

I believe that was for streaking issues with the Ultimate Wax not the Ultimate Polish...

I'll give it another try. This car is a daily driver and I was running out of day light so I was in a hurry. I'll watch my technique the next time and see what happens. I didn't get use #7 either which is bothering me...even today! By the way, Would I have to strip the wax off before I could apply #7? Thanks everyone.

                Re: Ultimate Polish looking cloudy?

After using UC to correct the worst of the defects, moving to a W9207 finishing pad and Ultimate Polish should further refine the finish, adding clarity and gloss. While you can increase the work area a bit, you should still keep it fairly small and still wipe the product off before it dries. But UP should give you a very long buffing cycle and wipe off should be a breeze. We'd also suggest dropping the tool speed down to 3-4 from the 4-5 you've been using it at.

What size area have you been working on with it? You haven't been letting it dry out, have you?

Lastly, if you're going to use UP you shouldn't need M07 as well. UP is pretty well loaded with polishing oils plus it contains SMAT abrasives similar to M205, hence it's ability to clarify the finish while adding the gloss.

                  Re: Ultimate Polish looking cloudy?

Thanks Michael for the response. I would guess that I was working with a 2x2 area...maybe more at times. The cloudiness would make one think that I had stopped in the middle of a buffing cycle without allowing enough time to produce clarity. It surprised me because I'm using a first generation PC and a 7 inch polishing pad so the cutting ability is limited even on my best day. Looking back, I was running out of time and I feel I should have concentrated more on the technique. I should not have rushed it but I was just not expecting what appeared to be a significant amount of cutting or marring. Oh, I almost forgot, the UP was removed right after the final pass. I've not given up on UP. I'm inclined to believe it is the novice user not the product.
By the way, if I have time, I actually enjoy applying #7! Thanks again.
