  • Should I be scared to use Ultimate Compound?

I have used SwirlX and ScratchX on my vehicles with no problem. I am currently working on my wife's 2009 Escalade. There are some surface scratches and swirls on the hood that the ScratchX is not removing. I guess the next aggressive step is Ultimate Compound which I have never used. I am not a professional detailer, so this would be my first time using UC. Is this a safe product for consumer use or is this something I really have to be careful with.

I also, should I apply by hand or with my Megs DA?

UC is absolutely safe for use with the DA, just use care around edges and high spots (or tape them off) and use slow, even pressure.

It is very safe to use. UC is actually one of the very first products I've used when I started using my DA.

I say go for it! I have used it on two different vehicles now, one with factory paint and one that was repainted. The UC worked great on both! I used a DA and the first car I did with the DA I used the UC with no issues.

Hey...I don't mean to jack the thread, is it ok to use UC on plastic headlights by hand?

Yes, but you may want to follow up with PlastX if the headlights need a little more refining when you're done with the UC.

We've used Ultimate Compound via DA in every single Saturday Car Care 101 Class since UC was introduced. The variety of finishes has been huge, and UC with a W8207 polishing pad has proven itself time and time again - even in the hands of a total novice student who had never even seen a DA before that morning.

You'll not only be perfectly fine and safe with it, you'll probably wonder why you've waited so long to use it!!

Don't be scared to use it! its easy to use for a compound! however, it is still a compound and I'd say maybe just give it a little "respect", just to be sure everything works out nicely. "ultimately", i'd say go for it! DA's would make the job even wasier, and give better results. If you're nice cadillac has a few swirls and scratches, just imagine how shiny your car will be..

And yes, your car looks very nice!

I guess I remember when I was a kid and my dad had compound in a can that you had to use a screwdriver to get the lid off. If you rubbed it on the car, you always made the paint worse. I didn't think twice about using SwirlX or ScratchX, but I guess the word "compound" in the name Ultimate Compound scared me a little with flashbacks......

Re: Should I be scared to use Ultimate Compound?

THe great thing about ultimate compound is its user-friendliness. Unlike the compounds in a can we both used in the distant past which is hard to use, and yield very little improvement in paint gloss and clarity while eating away at the clearcoat with every gentle stroke, ultimate compound is easier to work with. Its almost like saying "ultimate compound will only cause problems if the user wants it to", other than that, it really works.. just keep the word "compound" in mind but don't be afraid of it. Just enjoy it!
