  • Washing UNDERNEATH the car

As the title states, especially for us in the colder parts of the world....how do you all go about cleaning off the salt, and anti ice brines the city uses on the roads.
I can figure out wheel wells....but what about the undercarriage?

I go to a coin-op place, hit the soap then the rinse. Kind of angle the wand up under there.

I've found the best way to wash off the undercarriage is to place a lawn sprinkler under the car. Then drive back and forth over the sprinkler. You would be amazed how much dirt and grime can be removed this way. Of course, you would have to wait for a fairly warm day................

Hit the coin-op place but bring along a set of ramps. Drive up onto the ramps and do as Murr said, just soap it up and rinse it off, very simple. I do this all Winter long to combat the salt up here!

Give me another 6 months, and I should be able to help you with that.

Don't forget to let the engine COOL, before doing the coin-op suggestion.

Not sure if this is practical, to let the engine cool will take at least 30 minutes !!!

For winter, I just use water to rinse off the bottom of the car (from front, back, and both sides) as well as the wheel wells.

Practicality takes a back seat when it comes to not warping your rotors, or cracking/distorting aluminum.

If you are talking about under the car I just use my Gerni Water blaster to foam up the bottom of the car then just water blast it off. This worked really well when I ran over some over some animal waste.

Would the water spray warp the rotors?
Lets say you are driving in a hot day and it starts raining. The rotors will be hot and the rain water would get to the rotors.

Here in the UK, I do what I do every year after winter. Attach my snow foam lance to my pressure washer and cover the underneath of the car in snow foam. Allow to soak for 10 mins then use my pressure washer with clean water to rinse.

Wheels are designed to keep water (among other thing) from getting to your rotors. Although it will happen to some (small) extent. But taking a pressure washer to piping hot rotors can and will warp them. Same goes for the engine, it can and sometimes will distort or CRACK an engine block, or other items.

It seems like automatic car washes would be experiencing ton's of lawsuits.

                            Agreed.
In a car wash, high-pressured water gets inside the wheels all the time.
