  • Awful Result on Corvette

    Hi, Newbie here.

I've used Meguiar's products happily in past. But took my new Corvette to it's home and Corvette Museum. There they recommended another product which I got and applied both exterior and interior. Got back home and decided to go back to trusty Meguiar's. But when I put the Meguiar's on, disaster! Hood is chalky and blotched. Interior is chalky too. What now??

What products did you use? How did you apply them? What surface prep did you do?

      Pictures would help.

        Welcome to Meguiar's Online, Pete.

What product was recommended and applied before you went back to Meguiar's stuff?

        Any chance of some pictures?

          Thanks for the fast replies...
The Corvette Museum products were C-Magic. The Meguiar's products were Quick Detailer and Quick Interior Detailer I believe.

I have used Meguiar's products on numerous Corvettes, from a 1957 to a 2010, and have never had a problem with any product. Usually, if you run into an issue, you didn't use the product correctly or prep the surface correctly.

Yeah, I have to say, something sounds off.

Any chance of a pic of the hood, interior?

any chance the products you used have gotten frozen. That does bad things to most of these type of products. Do you keep them in the garage where is gets cold?

                    Re: Awful Result on Corvette

The headline does not do justice to Meguiars, sorry. My 'Vette is a 2008 and I used Meguiars fine in the beginning. Then overlaid the C product after seeing some great results from it at the Vette Museum. But then went back to Meguiars when I got home. Combining the two is the real culprit I'm sure. The question now is how to best strip off and start over, if I can...sorry for the confusion.

You need to give the Vette a nice wash. If you could get a hand at some Meguiars Body Solvent would be great...but you could try a dishwashing soap...it will remove most of the oils in the surface....clay after the step....

Using a Meguiars wax, someone elses wax, then a Meguiars wax shouldnt really be any big deal.

I could see an interior dressing being a bit more touchy, but still unusual.

Just cleaning the surfaces well would be the best start. You could wash and use a paint cleaner, or even the dish soap if you had to try something stronger.

Interior, you could look at QID or APC to try.

Maybe stripping the wax and starting over is the best way to go, but it may well be that simply giving the car a good ordinary wash will remove the chalkiness you have described. Quite honestly, it simply sounds like you didn't apply the Gold Class wax correctly--either it was applied too thick or you didn't allow it to set-up sufficiently before removing or both. If the car wash does not clean up the paint adequately, you could then give it a IPA/water wipedown. Another option after the wash would be to go over the paint with Cleaner Wax and then top it with your preferred protectant.

I don't understand the interior blotching. I've never had any problems with Quik Interior Detailer. As recommended above, you might want to wash the vinyl with APC to remove the previously applied dressing.

If washing doesn't remove the chalkiness, try mild clay next

                              Re: Awful Result on Corvette

It is highly unusual (as in almost never) to see any true "chemical reaction" between two different lines of products, so we really doubt any real damage has been done here, no matter how bad things might look.

For the interior, give this a shot: take a clean terry cloth towel and soak it in very warm water, but wring it out thoroughly so that it's damp and warm. Then wipe down the effected areas of the interior with it. This will remove any water based products applied to the surface and it should clean things up - you may need a couple of applications to get max results though. Go over it again with a clean, dry towel just to ensure you've gotten everything, then reapply your favorite dressing.

As for the exterior, a good wash should correct it but if it doesn't then even a light once over with a mild paint cleaner or even a decent cleaner wax (A12 Cleaner Wax or ColorX) will take care of it. Not knowing what you might have on hand, SwirlX or Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner are also viable alternatives.
