Hey there all
I use the line of Meg's, Sonax and Nigrin, the latter two German stuff.
As accurately placed here, prepping is the key IMHO. The smoother and blemish free your surface is, the better your results... and yes, I also agree that if your surface is properly prepped, even olive oil can give you an incredible shine.
But for how long right ? Yes, THAT is where waxes differ. If you get a real shine lasting for 5-6-7 washes (that would be 2 weeks for me, since I wash twice a week) THAT is what I call a good wax.
Durability is excellent with Meg's and the shine you have gets even better when you use the QD daily. (I give a QD run around every morning and evening going to and coming back from work.

Joe, I have tried a lot of different waxes and sealants. What can I say, I came down with the "sickness" and for almost two years searched high and wide for the ultimate protectant for my car. I am now repenting of my foolishness.

As Dave mentioned above, the most significant contribution you can make to the shine of your paint is machine polishing: the smoother you can make the paint, the glossier and more reflective the paint becomes.

But back to your question: Does a wax/sealant that costs $30 confer a 100% visually superior appearance to a wax/sealant that costs $15? Probably not. My favorite sealant for my black S2K, for example, is Blackfire Wet Diamond. Does my car look 100% better when dressed in Wet Diamond than when dressed, say, in NXT? No. I think I prefer the look WD gives; I think it looks better to me; but I must also admit that in a blind wax test I probably could not tell the difference, at least visually. (WD is exceptionally slick, so I might be able to pick it out based on touch.) In other words, the visual difference between the two products is subtle (if in fact a visual difference exists at all). So why do I prefer WD? Because I find it an easier product to use and because it seems to be more durable than NXT. For me, non-visual considerations justify the purchase of the more expensive product; but this is just my personal, and very subjective, preference.

IMO, Meguiar's waxes and sealants give good value for the money. It's also a huge plus that they are so widely available. One might argue that Collinite 845 or Duragloss 105, for example, gives better value; but you're going to have to buy it online and pay for shipping. All of these considerations need to be factored in.

But if you are still itching to try out a boutique wax and won't be satisfied until you try one, send me a private message and I'll make a suggestion or two.

EVERYTHING used on that car cost less than $10 per bottle. Does it look comparable to cars that have had products that cost 2 or 3 or 5 times as much per product? Yes.

Ultimately it is up to the user, so try what you want, but in my personal experience, there is nothing that Meguiar's cannot do that looks just as good, if not better than other products on the market.

As I'm sure you know, it's not about just one product that gets the job done, but a whole array of different products, and Meguiar's makes something for just about everything!

wax in scale of 1 to 10 is like 3 for shine and 7 for protection in the best case in my opinion. The real thing for a great shine is polishing preferably with DA or Rotary. I really looks wax and polisher for shine more than protection so I dont spend a lot in a ultra protective wax, BTW I wax the car monthly. I use Meguiars and Mother products, also turtle wax ICE products sometimes, really, after the 5 steps you get a nice looking car. I think that the most important part for shine is the polishing (Machine compounding and polishing and glaze) After that the wax is merely protective you cant have more shine than a good polishing

Don't confuse the issue here - your wax is not what makes your car shine (which is AWESOME by the way), it's what you've done to prepare the surface (clay / compound / polish) prior to waxing that has made your car look like it does.

The primary job of any wax/sealant has to be one of PROTECTION. Any added gloss etc gained by application of an LSP is merely a bonus.

Regarding the original question, IMO Meguiar's stuff for the most part is absolutely just as good, if not better than similar products from other manufacturers. A lot of it however comes down to the person using the products, and whether they actually fully understand the capabilities (and thus possible limitations) of a particular product.

Also (in the US at least), Meguiar's is CRAZILY GOOD value - more often than not, it is cheaper for me to import things to Australia from the USA (and pay shipping costs etc), than to buy the same things here in Australia!

Some of it also comes down to personal preference - for me, I've been using Meguiar's stuff for a few years now, and I am comfortable with using their products in a 'system', as I know what results I am going to get with each stage of this 'system'. There are other companies I use for certain products, but the majority of my arsenal is indeed Meguiar's.

Probably not twice the results for twice the price. Megs is famous for value. Also it depends upon the product. I have done a lot of researching online to find the best for my needs (cant afford to try every. Thing myself) and different boards like different products. If you google wax or sealant and "horsebox" you can see some items compared for durability. Otherwise you might want to compare two items at a time (eg nxt vs wolfgang dgps).
Side note: I keep coming back to megs.
