You also mentioned using ScratchX on the effected area - can you describe what you saw both on the body panel and your applicator after using it? What we're looking for here are a couple of things: did the applicator show color from the paint being transfered (a sure sign of single stage paint), and was there any noticeable improvement to the spot where ScratchX was applied?

What color is this car actually? From that picture it's hard to tell if it's white, light yellow, metallic, etc.
yes there are high and low spots like it ate away the paint.

the scratch x smooted the edges of the streaks a little and there was very little color on the applicator and that looked to be more primer from the area where the finish was gone.

the vehicle is gold colored and the scratch x made no improvement but cutting down the streaks edge a little.

it definately seems to have had a clear or a very hard paint, i used scratch x on my trunk previously for some very fine scratches and no color transfered to the applicator at that time either.(well very little)

Re: Very Serious Paint Problem Need Help !!!!

        New mail from 3M...

        "Thanks for the additional information.

We would like to test the product to see if it was manufactured to our specifications. To that end, we will send you a container, along with a plastic bag, absorbent packing materials, special labels and a postage paid label. Please box up the product using the materials scribed and leave it for your postal carrier. It will come back to us at no cost to you.

        Regards,"

Now sending this back leaves me absolutely no proof of a bad product if it turns out later this product does get recalled or something. What should I do, spray some into a glass container and hold on to it?

You keep all correspondence and pictures, as you should with any kind of dispute/problem, until it is resolved.

Re: Very Serious Paint Problem Need Help !!!!

Well just an update, I had sent the spray back to them and had not heard anything, so today I decided to go back through my emails and called the # that was listed in the emails.

The guy I was dealing with retired !!!

The guys replacement had no idea about the situation, but found that the spray had been sent to the lab and thats it.

He asked what type of resolution me and the other guy came to, and I said we had not gotten to that point.

He is going to check with the technician and see what the findings were.

It killed me to see the damage that was done to my baby.

I pulled her out of the garage and washed and waxed her and it hurt even more.

I bought a 2 step clay bar kit from another manufacturer (was on clearance and they dont carry Meguiars clay bar) and used step one on a small section of Goldy a couple weeks ago.

Today when I did a wash and wax with Gold Class Paste, that one spot sure did look extra rich and shiny.

I could imagine how nice it would have looked if I did a full Meguiars treatment on her, she would have looked like a shiny gold brick in my driveway.

That's some serious bad luck. I have used tons of that product with pretty good results and nothing really negative like you encountered. Good luck!

                *UPDATE*

Ok talked with 3M again, their test on the product came back within current spec.

However the person I spoke with admitted to me they have had complaints about this product and others reacting with some automotive finishes.

The other product he spoke of was their Emblem Adhesive which if applied to lightly will not adhere well, but if applied more heavily will react with certain paints and attack it.

I of course have no recourse due to the directions saying do not let the product run, but you cannot help it with the nossle they supply on the can and when applying it on a auto side panel where most adhesives will be (not many emblems glued on hoods roofs and trunks).

So for anyone looking to use an adhesive remover skip the one in this thread or you may also be sorry.

Its a sad day when a product used for its purpose costs someone $3000

Come tax season next year I will be taking my car to the body shop for a new coat.

I'd really have to question the quality of the paint on the vehicle. I've seen some seriously harsh products applied to paint, including brake cleaner, brake fluid, lighter fluid, paint stripper, etc. and have never seen permanent damage done. Unfortunate.

How do you know that? Unless you know the type of paint that was used, how is was applied and such. You can't tell the "quality" of the paint by looking at it. I've seen paint applied by Maaco wash off a vehicle in a heavy rain storm, and then Maaco stated it was paint of great quality when the customer complained. All I'm saying is that maybe the vehicle was perhaps repainted years ago with cheap paint and now you are paying the price.

Well my basis for thinking it was decent paint is that I used mineral spirits to wipe down the vehicle after washing it to try to remove contaminants, then used Meguiars Scratch X to rmove some small scratches and swirl marks, used Meguairs Gold Class Paste Wax and through all this no colpr came off on the rags (which were white) just dirt and such. So it seems the paint was pretty strong and had a good bond.

Thats all, take what I say as fact or dont, thats up to you.
