  • Can someone explain the clay process?

I'm a total newbee and from what I'm reading the clay process removes oxidation. I have never heard of clay so can someone entail what this is about? I live in the Phoenix area so if you can give places where I can purchase any items I would appreciate it.

Clay consists of a lubricant and a synthetic clay bar. You spray the lubricant, which is a quik detailer type product, on the paint then wipe the car on the surface until you can hear it is no longer picking up bonded contaminants. It depends on how severe of oxidation your talking about here, but clay is capable of removing some oxidation.

Detailer's cleaning clay is a soft pliable plastic bar that contains abrasives to remove embedded pollutants by encapsulation or shearing, lifting debris from the paint film surface and leaves behind an ultra-smooth surface that will make your paint protection adhere better and improve its durability.

It also makes the pre-wax cleaning much easier, and its mild abrasives remove light surface etching, abrasions and oxidation. This microscopic polishing removes surface marring and cleaning without harm to the paint film surface. Detailers Clay is also very effective on paint over-spray

Dependant upon how much oxidation you could try a product that contains a solvent type cleaner (Medallion Paint Cleaner)

Just to add some additional observations. The objective of claying your paint is to remove bonded contaminants that are stuck ON the paint. The clay should glide smoothly (hydroplane) over the paint surface and where a particle is sticking up higher than the paint it will be caught up in the clay and removed. While clay can remove some oxidation, it is not well suited to the task. For removal of oxidation a paint cleaner or polish should be used. For neglected paint, I'd suggest both are needed.
