And if there is an acidic component to the rain, if it is not removed (neutralized) then each time it gets wet the acid is activated, and even more etching occurs.
We think the optimum method of curing severe acid etching is a 3 step chemical bath to neutralize (pH ~7.1)the paint (AutoInt's A-B-C System) and then leveling the finish to the depth of the etching.
A bunch of work, to be sure...
