  • New Meguiar's user and confused by which product

    Hello,
I just got a new Toyota Vios, it's about a month old. Regular washed weekly and haven't been waxed yet.

I'm looking to purchase my first Meguiar's product but I don't know which one to get, here are some extra info if if may help.

I've noticed minor scratches around the car, I'm guessing cause every day I'll have to pass a construction site to get to work.

At my place, it only has 2 weather. Rain or sunny, no snow. Recently it has been raining almost every day.

Hmm anything else I should add?

Oh and one last thing, besides washing and drying the car, what else we need to do before waxing the car? And how regular do we need to wax the car, my friend told me every 3 months, and that providing you wash your car weekly.

    Thanks.

If you intend to DIY then there's a few items you will require in your arsenal.

Wash - p/h neutral wash - Meguiars Ultimate Wash&Wax, GoldClass or NXT

Clay - definitely required. Body, windscreen and wheels.

Polish - swirl x would suffice but for more serious defects - Ultimate Compound

Wax/Sealant - After the paint has been clayed and polished - protect with quality wax/sealant. Once a month would be best.

Maintenance - regular washing (at least once a week) and QD/spray waxes would be good.

Remember - quality drying towel, wash mitt, and microfibers are important if you want to reduce swirls/scratches. Note: technique is also part of the plan in combating reoccurred of swirls or scratches but tools are equally important.

    Hope I get that right.

There are two types of paint defects:

      1. Above surface - fresh bird droppings, dust, tree sap mist, industrial fallout, road film and over spray,

      2. Below surface (in the paint) - acid rain etching, scratches and swirls, oxidation and stains.

For above surface problems car wash and clay bar are the tools. After washing and drying your car touch your paint (horizontal panel, like hood) with the inner side of your hand and if there are some rough areas/ bumps it means that you have bonded contaminants and you need to use a clay bar to remove them. Clay will also guarantee better bonding between wax and paint surface.

For below surface issues paint cleaners do the work. They simply level the paint removing small amount of clear coat (or base coat in single stage paint).

If you have isolated scratches ScratchX would be a good choice. For bigger areas SwirlX or Ultimate Compound will do the work.
You need to wax your car every 3 months. And if you prepare the paint surface with clay bar and some paint cleaner you'll get a really good results and long lasting protection.

All Meguiar's products from Consumer Line can be hand applied. But you'll always get better results using a car polisher, like Meguiar's G110v2.

        For general care, I like:

        1. Wash
        2. Clay if needed
        3. ColorX
        4. Wax - Nxt 2.0, etc

To tackle the swirls/defects, you will need to look at the SwirlX/UC mentioned above.

Congrats on the new car wheelhot. My only comment to add would be the frequency of wax/sealant. Although some really will wax their car every month, or even more, most people will be lucky to find the time to do it twice a year. Don't let it go any longer then that though. If you use a sealant like NXT there's no need to do it every month. It will also be dependant on your surroundings and habits. Do you keep it in a garage? Do you park under trees? Do you take it through automatic car washes? Do you wash it every week with a dish detergent?

Re: New Meguiar's user and confused by which product

Firstly, what colour is the car??

These are the steps i would take (similar to what is mentioned above)

            1. Wash with the two bucket method, dry.
            2. Clay with SSCK
            3. Remove defects with UC or SwirlX (this step may not be necessary if you don't have swirls)
            4. Polish with DC or m07 (Optional, no need for this step on any car that is not dark coloured)
            5. Wax- NXT 2.0, or Carnauba (Personal preference, NXT will most probably last longer)
            6. Maintain with regular washing and quick detailers. (make sure that correct washing techniques are used)

Also, if you are working by hand, technique is important...

Ask if you have any questions,

            And Welcome To MOL!!

Wow loads of response, you guys rock! I love to be in forums like this.

BMW-5, the color of the car I guess is somewhere in the middle of light and dark grey I guess.

Regarding techniques, I guess I will head to the how to videos and see how thing goes.

Few things I would like to ask if I may:
              1. What to do if there's noticeable scratches (I don't think its that deep) on the windscreen?
              2. Is Ultimate Detailer ok with plastics/rubber/glasses?

Thanks TimG, greg0303, Murr1525, HCAD, and BMW-5 for your advice and opinions. Appreciate it.
