  • Weekly detail advice

I'm ordering a whole bunch of Meguiars products to keep me going for the next year or so.

1.Would UQD be ok to use if I use it once a week to clean the car? Or is plain QD better for cleaning? I wont be able to wash the car very often. Maybe every second month or so.

    2. Does UQW give a better finish than UQD? I'd rather stock up on more UQD and skip UQW if UQW is similar, as the UQD can be used to clean as well?

    3. Which is the better product for protecting the interior? Meguiars Quik Interior Detailer or Meguiars NXT Generation Cockpit Shine?

    4. For glass, is Meguiars NXT Generation Glass Cleaner any good?

    5. What would be the best way to keep the tires and wheels clean without washing?

I want to start a weekly routine. I use Nxt Gen Wash to wash but won't be able to do that much. I've used Nxt Tech Wax 2.0 and it is amazing so will stock up on that and apply every 3 months or so. Just need some advice for the weekly detail.

    1. UQD is better than QD as it is the new version. It isn't used to clean the vehicle, it is to remove light build-up of light dust/light surface dirt - not as an alternative for a car wash. It should be fine to use once a week, but once again, not recommended as a washing alternative.

    2. UQD removes light defects (lightly cleans the paint surface pre-spray wax), therefore you would use this before UQW to maintain your wax protection for as long as possible before you need to re-apply your wax of choice i.e. 'NXT Gen 2.0 techwax' or 'gold class carnauba wax' (which should be done every 3-4 months).

    3. This is whichever is a preference for yourself and will vary between vehicles. I use the 'QID' as it is the newer option and performs well, if you are detailing your 350Z I would use this instead of NXT gen cockpit shine. I am not familiar with NXT gen cockpit shine, but from the sounds of it, it wouldn't give you that nice stock 'natural' look as the QID natural shine can get you.

    4. Yes, NXT gen glass cleaner is very good. I use it with a Meguiar's MF towel and the window instantly comes up crystal clear.

    5. It is always difficult to keep tires and wheels clean at the best of times. With the tires, you could probably be fine with applying a 'Meguiar's Hot Shine Tyre Spray/Gel' and just rub it in with an application pad or sponge. Try 'Meguiar's waterless wash spray' on the wheels, I'm sure that would work fine? (someone might need to back me on that as I am not sure about its effectiveness on wheels).

    Good luck!

      1. You may want to look at ONR (Optimum No Rinse) as an option. May be better than QD when the dirt gets heavier.

      2. The QID has some UV protection, but you'll get more protection from a dressing. I would want the Supreme Shine dressing though, not the Nxt.

      3. The same QD or ONR would be options for the wheels.

        Re: Weekly detail advice

Thanks for the replies. I already have the following:

        Nxt Gen Wash
        Nxt Gen Tech Wax 2.0
Nxt Gen Insane Shine Tyre Spray (good stuff and the shine lasts for at least 2 weeks. I have been spraying this on though. Maybe I'musing too much product? Should I spray on an applicator pad and apply?)
Gold Class Leather Cleaner and Conditioner
Meguiars Clay Kit (Clay, Quick Detailer and Cleaner Wax. Have not yet used the Cleaner Wax as I use Nxt Tech 2.0)

I've got just one more dilemma. Is UQW similar to Nxt Tech 2.0? Nxt Tech is easy and quick to apply so I'd rather use Nxt Tech more often than using UQW as it gives better protection? So what I plan on doing is:

        1. Nxt Tech every 2 months
        2. UQD every week or two
        3. Clean and condition leather once a month
        4. Detail interior every week or two
        5. Try and wash car once a month at a nearby garage. (By myself ofc)

So I only really need to stock up on UQD and Nxt Tech 2.0.
I'm in South Africa so need to buy in bulk. Ordering from AutoGeek.net.

A comment about quick detailing. Assuming your car is driven regularly, quick detailing is something you want to do frequently, perhaps on a daily basis or every other day. As already mentioned, it is used to remove light dust; it is not designed for the safe cleaning of a dirty car. If you allow too many days to go by between quick details, sufficient dirt will have built-up that a regular wash will be required in order to safely clean the vehicle.

Yeah, trying an applicator pad for tire shine isnt a bad idea.

UQW is a spray wax, Nxt 2.0 is a liquid or paste. Yes, the Nxt Tech Wax will offer more protection.

Based on your time line above, you would use Nxt 2.0 every two months, and then UQW after the monthly wash if wanted.

            As a side note, UQD = #135, and Nxt 2.0 ~ #21 2.0.

              Re: Weekly detail advice

I just found a garage about 2kms away that will hose down my car. So will take it to them for initial hose down. Then drive back home and wash with Nxt Gen. Then drive back to garage for final rinse. Then back home again to wipe dry and detail.

So which will be better for the final touch after/while wiping dry? UQD or UQW. I'm torn between the two. I've heard that UQD gives a great shine so using UQW on top of it wouldn't really make much difference? Plus UQD can be used to remove light dust when I'm unable to wash so I see it as more useful. My car is always parked in an undercover garage, work and home, and the drive to work is 1.5kms. So I don't really expect the Nxt Tech wax coating to lose it's protection quickly.

Think I'm going to go for a few bottles of UQD and Nxt Tech Wax 2.0.

What's the difference between Supreme Shine and Ultimate Protectant? Both seem to do the same thing except that the Supreme Shine is a spray.

                Re: Weekly detail advice

Yeah, UQW would only be for after a wash, so if you want some more versatility, UQD would be that.

The Supreme Shine is going to be interior only, but will apply pretty easy. The Ultimate Protectant is inside/outside, but could be a hair trickier inside, being a gel.

As far as needing a few bottles, you may want to look at the #135/#21 mentioned above, if the price works out any better for you.

                  Re: Weekly detail advice

I'm concerned about one thing if I buy by the gallon. Will the product go bad after a few months if I use weekly? It will be constantly exposed to air. A gallon of Nxt Tech Wax will take a few years for me to use up so I will be worried if that the stuff will slowly change over time. (become thicker/settle etc.) Same story for UQD. That's why maybe the smaller consumer bottles is a safer option? As it will stay sealed until I need it.

                    Re: Weekly detail advice

Well, you can buy the #21 in 16oz, 64oz, or gallon I think, you'd have to just run the numbers on what works out best for you. Or if something is on sale more, etc.

The #135 would be a gallon I think.

The UQD/#135 would be fine unless kept some where very hot/cold. The wax would have a higher chance of separating.

What I have right now is an empty UQD spray bottle, and I pour my bottle of #135 into it to use it.

I also never mentioned the Detailer Line Glass Cleaner. The very watery things wont separate like a wax or paint cleaner would.

                        Re: Weekly detail advice

I see. Buying the large gallons do work out a lot cheaper. Around twice the product for the same price. Think I'm just going to go for the consumer size Nxt Tech Wax though as I probably wont finish that bottle in a year. Plus I've still got a bottle of Nxt Tech Wax that I've used only 3 times. Will buy a gallon of the #135 and fill in the UQD spray bottle when needed. Thanks for all your help!

What is the QD equivalent in the professional line? Autogeek doesn't seem to stock plain QD. Will need this just for claying.
