  • Need answers please....

I'm going to clean up my friends car tomorrow for her borthers wedding. A couple of weeks ago she had a mishap using a wheel cleaner on her DPE wheels and staining them. From what she tells me the wheels are forged 3 piece and powder coated. I dont have any pics of the rims so im takin a shot in the dark here. I was going to use wheel brightener to clean while washing and then use the hot rims mag wheel polish after to try and get the stain out of the rim. Is this method ok? If not can you guys please give me your thoughts. The rim is flat black, don't think it has a clear coat over the face, but the lip is a gloss black. Any ideas or techniques will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Wheel Brightener is pretty stout stuff, and even All Wheel Cleaner recommends NOT to use it on anodized, powder coated, magnesium or un-coated wheels. We would suggest you not use WB on them either.

Further, Hot Rims Mag & Aluminum Polish is only for use on bare metal but these are powder coated - so we would recommend against this process too.

Your best bet is probably just soap and water and then a light paint cleaner such as SwirlX, gently at first, by hand to try and address any staining. Being that these are powder coated there is a very good chance that you won't be able to correct the damage. Of course, without seeing the damage it's a bit hard to say for sure, but powder coating generally doesn't lend itself to correction quite the same way paint does. There are a lot of variables with this, however, so while we aren't trying to discourage you from trying to fix these wheels, we just want you to be prepared for what might be a near impossible task. If, on the other hand, the wheels cooperate with you, then great!

And don't forget, if you try to do almost anything to the flat black portion of the wheel (other than washing, of course) you're bound to start putting a shine to that area. And very likely it won't be a nice uniform shine either.
