  • Water spots nightmare

    Hi mates

2 weeks ago i have applied #26 yellow wax by hand and was happy with the results.

But 2 days ago some stupid man with a garden hose in his hand washed my car just parked near his car for fun with a water coming out of well. And it dried in 42-45 celsius degrees and i ve seen water spots on it.

yesterday i have washed my car with a shampoo & sponge and dried it with microfiber but all of the spots were still there.
    • although there was 1 layer of #26 it did not help anyway .
    • after drying i decided to apply #26 again to see if it helps to remove but it did not anyway.
kindly waiting for some help and advise to remove this silly spots.

Have you tried using a clay bar yet?
Am i obsessed?? A car is the second biggest financial investment for most people, why not keep it looking better than new?

You want to start with the least aggressive product first and work your way up. As suggested already, try the clay bar to see if that helps any. It sounds like you have some etching, though.

        1. SwirlX - This is the least aggressive option. Try this first to see if your spots improve any.

        2. ScratchX 2.0 - If the SwirlX doesn't take care of it, this will give you a little more cutting power to reduce the etching from the water spots.

        3. Ultimate Compound - This is the most aggressive option. If the above items didn't work, this should be able to take the water etching out no problem. I was able to get rid of some severe etching on my dad's GMC Sierra 2500HD a couple months ago and it looked great when I was done! (no photos available)

Try out these items and see where it leaves you. As usual, be sure to take some pictures to document what you did so we can all see and learn!

          Re: Water spots nightmare

Well water generally contains a very high level of minerals and other things that can cause all kinds of problems with the paint. When the water evaporates these minerals and other things are left behind on the paint. All water spots start this way but the end result can vary widely. Simple water spots can be wiped off with some quick detail spray and a microfiber towel. Slightly more stubborn spots may require a cleaner wax, or at least a light paint cleaner to remove them. Sometimes just washing with some distilled white vinegar in a bucket of water is all that's needed.

But when that water is allowed to dry on the surface at such high heat (well in excess of 100F) then these minerals can actually start to etch and bake into the paint, and that can lead to some serious problems. Anything like this that has the ability to etch into the paint is not going to be stopped by any wax or sealant. In order for a wax or sealant to prevent this from happening it would have to, quite literally, be stronger than the paint itself. That is simply not going to happen.

We've seen cases where the spots were a combination of surface contaminants and below surface etching. This required a two part process to fully remove the offending spots - claying to remove the above surface portion will smooth out the finish, but leave the below surface etching behind. That needs to be addressed with a mildly abrasive paint cleaner such as SwirlX or, most likely, Ultimate Compound. While this can be done by hand, the job is more effectively and quickly accomplished with a D/A polisher.

Keep in mind all of this is sort of a "worst case scenario", but well water that has allowed to dry and bake at those temperatures can often lead to that.

One of our employees recently experienced a similar situation, but it was the sprinklers at his complex that were constantly battering his truck, night after night. When he could no longer take it, he brought it into the garage here at work and we removed the spots with Ultimate Compound on a G110v2 buffer. Below are the before and after shots of the mess:

Put rubbing alcohol on a microfiber and soak the sap with it. The alcohol will break it down and will be easy to remove. Once it has been softened, remove carefully. Afterward, use a little #80/SwirlX and top with a wax of your choice. Works like a charm for me.
