  • Super glue on paint... help!

My first DA project is getting more and more challenging.
but it is a learning project so i will do whatever it takes to learn.
    even wet sanding.

    so...
my wife's grandpa glue a side mirror back to the car...
now it has some super glue on the side of the car...

that i think would dmanage my new polishing pad.
so i would like to use some sand paper to remove them...
but i only have 1000grit 3M automotive sand paper...

it is ok if i be really careful and remove just the glue?

    thanks,
    Steve

    sorry for all those questions.

First of all you may want to take a peek at the product's MSDS sheet and see if it suggests methods for removal. You may even want to phone 3M's product support.

I really don't know how old that glue was...
I might just skip that part, not to polish it so that i don't damage my pad.
Can I get those in Europe?
I am not in Kansas anymroe...

and products are equal to that?

How about trying a plastic scraper blade and some bug and tar remover to loosen it up first?

Might be easier just to take a peek around instead of hoping someone knows if that stuff is available there. I'd have to imagine nail polish/acetone is. It's pretty universal stuff.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I can see the possibility of chipping paint off in the process of trying to get the super glue off that way.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I use the plastic scraper blades all the time to remove badging and dealers branding stickers and have never once had a problem.

Am I missing something? Is the mirror on the exterior of the car?

                        Executionerhk,

If I understand correctly, you are planning to wet sand with 1000 grit and hope to remove the sanding marks with a DA Polisher? This process will require the use of a high speed rotary buffer as a DA Polisher will not do the job.

I do too. Bonded and cured super glue is a bit different than vinyl and emblem adhesive though.

You are correct: It chips off very easily unlike the sticky adhesives. I used a plastic scraper on about 10 drips of superglue that a neighbor of mine got on his BMW when he was trying to attach a fake M decal to his trunk lid, and it worked great.

I'm not saying it can't work. I was erring on the side of caution. What if paint does come off with it? Your going to be kicking yourself at that point. Do whatever you like though.
