  • Which is more aggressive?

    1. Trying to work some scratches out, which is more aggressive, ultimate compoung or fine cut cleaner?
    2. If I buff out the car with the ultiamte compound, do I need a step betrween that and polish?
    Thanks in advance. Jon

    Re: Which is more aggressive?

    1. Ultimate Compound is stronger.

    2. Possibly, some paints may not finish out perfectly from a strong product.

What are you working on and trying to do?

      1. Definitely Ultimate Compound.

      2. You'll have to judge yourself as it does depend on paint. You could follow UC with SwirlX.

I am working on a 15 year old paint job color and clear coat on a '69 Chevelle. I need one step stronger than the ultimate compound, I thought it would be UC, then fine cut then medium cut, maybe not.

          Re: Which is more aggressive?

Sounds like we might be running two product names together? Ultimate Compound (UC) is the Consumer Line product in the black bottle?

You are working by DA, hand, etc?

That is getting into really strong products, dont want to cause a bigger problem on the paint if it is not what you needed.

            Here it is

The Aggressiveness Order of SMAT Products - This might surprise you! Super Micro Abrasive Technology = SMAT From left to right, the most aggressive to the least aggressive SMAT products From the most to the least aggressive... M105 Ultra-Cut Compound/M95 Speed Cut Compound = The same in abrading power

              Re: Which is more aggressive?

Okay, I am using the black bottle UC with a Porter Cable DA. I am having trouble getting some relatively fine scratches out this way. I don't see how the fine cut and medium cut stack up against the 105 and 95 and UC in the last post (which by the way was great). Any suggestions? I may have let my pad get too full and that may have cut down on the cutting strength.

UC is close to 105. #95 is for rotary use.

Can anyone confirm the accuracy of this chart. Any of the Meguiar's chart that I have seen list M105 as being more aggressive than M95. It makes me question the remainder of the chart. Maybe they are just lumping them into one level of aggressiveness (meaning there is no particular order if they are in the pink area).

It certainly looks in the ball park.

Are you certain that the swirls are not being removed, and that it is not small swirls moving around and being put back into the paint?

I don't know about D151 being as low on the list as it is. I have seen it do some pretty decent correcting to the point that I thought it would be higher up than scratch-x.

                      Maybe not though.

The swirls are not an issue, I am trying to get out fine scratches that you can not feel with a finger nail.

Now instead of SCANNING... (like we're all prone to do on discussion forums), read the below very carefully.

The order shown here is relative, to the idea that if all things were equal, if all influencing factors could be controlled and be identical when using these products.

That of course is impossible because some of these products are only recommended for use with a rotary buffer while some of these products are only recommended for use by hand or with a dual action polisher. So if we were to follow the manufactures recommendations then we wouldn't be able to compare all of these products side-by-side because in some examples they cannot be used in an equal manner.

I guess I am comparing consumer products to professional products, but according to what everyone has said and the charts it looks like consumer grade in the black bottle ultimate compound is the same as professional #105 ultra cut compound, correct???

Well, #105 had to be formulated to work with the heat of the rotary, while UC is not. Plus the #105 dusts more and dusts quicker than UC. But they are very similar in cut.
