  • Problem with NXT 2.0

So I'm new here. It's great to have so many resources concerning my new hobby! We just purchased a new 2011 Hyundai Sonata couple weeks ago and I'm determined to keep it in tip top shape. I was using Gold Class paste wax when we had our silver Corolla, but when we purchased the Sonata, I changed over to NXT 2.0 and I'm having a little bit of a problem.

I cleaned the car when we first bought it with Ultimate wash and wax and then parked in in the garage and wiped her down with some UQD. I then used clayed her with some QD for prep (didn't need too much she's new) and proceeded to use some Cleaner Wax to prep for the NXT 2.0. I waxed, let it dry, and wiped it off without any issues, then I applied the NXT 2.0, let it dry for about 20 minutes and wiped it off, but I was getting all kinds of streak/swirl marks when I was taking it off. I tried pressing lightly, harder, and everything in between to see if it was me, but I couldn't figure it out...

So, cut to yesterday and I'm washing the car and did everything like I normally do and I decide to put two coats of wax on this time and let the second one dry over night just in case the problem was that I wasn't leaving enough drying time. I wiped it off this morning with the SAME problem. I just don't get what's going on! I have black paint, so it's REALLY noticeable and makes it look like it has a cheap wax job. Here is a video to show exactly what I'm talking about... don't mind my wife... she was in a hurry, but I wanted to get some video before the car hit the elements.

It appears to be streaking. How heavy are you putting down the NXT? You only need a thin thin coat of wax. This saves time and money.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

      I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.

I thought I wasn't putting too thick of a coat... but from some other advice I've received, I think I'm putting it on too thick... I guess in a few weeks and a few washes, I might try it again and try to be thinner.

If I wanted to just take the wax off now and retry, what would be the best course of action? Or should I just wait?

I would go ahead and apply another "thin layer" of wax, let it dry for the recommended amount of time, and remove. Use a fresh MF for a final wipe. Sometimes the only thing that will remove residue right away, rather than waiting for it to evaporate, is a like product, in this case, NXT.

I would agree with Fly Bye. If you apply another coat of wax, it should take care of the streaking.

Take a look at this video on how to use the G110. I believe you are waxing by hand, but the last minute of the video shows wax being applied with the machine. You can see how thinly Mike puts the wax on, and you should do the same by hand.

If you are using paste wax, I know it is easy to go heavy, (even if you are using liquid, you can go heavy too), so just try to keep it thin so it cleans up nice.

Apply another thin coat of wax. Also shake up the wax vigorously before and during the application. Make sure it is a very thin coat.

After washing, I think I would apply a thin coat of Cleaner Wax. That will remove all the layers of NXT you have applied and give you a chance to start fresh. Allow the CW to haze (use the swipe test) and buff off. Then apply a THIN coat of NXT. Let it dry 30-45 minutes. Buff off. Hopefully the car will then look brilliant, with no streaking or pseudo-holograms.

As others have said, it sounds as though you applied it a bit heavy. Drying time could be an issue as well since removal before it's completely dry can lead to streaking as well. Combine a slightly heavy application with insufficient dry time and the odds only increase.

A very thin coat is all that's needed - 2 to 3 ounces will cover a full sized car - and then at least 20 minutes dry time. If the temp is cool and/or humidity is high, let it dry for 30 minutes or more. It will still wipe off with ease.

Thanks guys for the info on everything. Life happens and I've been pretty busy and forgot about my post, but I do appreciate the knowledge. I actually noticed after a couple of days that the wax no longer streaked... maybe it just cured more? I'm not sure, but I should be waxing in the next week or two and I'll be sure to watch just how much I'm using. I think I'm definitely applying too thick from many videos I've watched.

                      Re: Problem with NXT 2.0

I recently have had the same problem with a bottle of NXT 2.0 purchased from Amazon. This is the first time I ever had this problem with NXT 2.0. I thought I didnt let it dry long enough so on a 2nd car I let it dry for 45 min. on a 70 degree dry day (longer than I usually let it dry), and the same problem had happened. Swipe test comes off in some areas and streaks in others. It seems "greasy" when taking the wax off and never really completely comes off, even the next day. Shouldnt the product be "completely dry" by then? So I ended up wiping down the car with #135, problem solved.

I know I am NOT putting it on too thick and am completely shaking the bottle before application, like I said before this is the first problem I have had with NXT 2.0. Could it be that Amazon is storing the product wrong?? I was going to buy a different bottle from WalMart or ADS and see if the same thing happens.

Thin application and longer curing time, that solves nxt problem for me. If i can feel the pad is still oily, glides on the panel without squeak and you can still see a layer when you apply it on a clear glass, then it can still be applied, resulting in very thin layer for me. Sometimes re-buff the streak with QD & MF would do the job as well.

NXT 2.0 has the tendency to act very funny when it is either applied too thick or not allowed to cure properly. There have been many threads on this problem with NXT 2.0. Proper technique seems to effect NXT 2.0 more than other waxes I have seen, especially Gold Class Carnauba Plus. Anyway, just thinking out loud.

BlackSunshine-Perhaps one of the sctions of the car was in the sun and the other wasn't? Was there a breeze of any kind that day? Factors like these could effect how quickly certain sections dry opposed to others. Was it a very humid day? Whatever the cause I hope your problem gets fixed!

Nope, in the garage dry 70-73 deg day. That is what I find so odd, I never had this problem before and to see other people have the same problems. Tend to think it might be a bad lot of NXT. Once I get around to getting another bottle Ill report back. Now I will just enjoy the coat of m16 I put on top of the NXT!!

                              NXT UPDATE:
I just bought a bottle of NXT from WalMart and DID NOT have the same streaky/greasiness problems as with the bottle I bought from Amazon. Same weather conditions when applied to the car, same thickness, same everything. The WalMart bottle worked just like any other bottle I previously bought.

So this leads me to believe that it could be a bad lot of NXT floating around, or bad storage/old stock by Amazon. Since I am not the only person this has happened to.
