  • What would you use a Wool Polishing Pad for?

I was looking on ADS and came across two pads made by Buff'n Shine:
    Wool Pile Buffing Pad: http://www.autodetailingsolutions.net/301g.html
    Wool Polishing Pad: http://www.autodetailingsolutions.net/301gy.html

Could someone please tell me what I would use the Wool Polishing Pad for? Thanks in advance!

The buffing pad can be used for very heavy correction ability/1,200 grit sanding marks. The polishing pad is not as aggressive as the buffing pad.

I believe it adds more cut. I'll let a pro chime in.

Wool pads are solely used for compounding and on rotary only. Though they do have wool polishing pads, the finish left behind is not perfect and will have light marring/holograms.

I know they are for rotary only and I intend to use them with a drill to repair headlights mainly. I am simply confused to why there is a Wool Polishing Pad and a Buffing Pad when I thought that all wool pads were only used for aggressive correction. Thanks for all the replies guys! Much appreciated!

They are both aggressive, the wool polishing pad being less aggressive than the wool buffing pad.

Not all wool pads were for aggressive correction. There are different types of wool pads out there that range from different types of wool(natural, synthetic), different construction(straight, twisted), and different thickness of the strands itself(soft, coarse.) Long before foam pads were popular to and still in their infancy wool pads all there was. They had to have a softer and less aggressive wool pad to follow up the compounding stage. Thats why there are wool polishing pads. Once foam became popular they sort of became obsolete.

                Wool Pads Pros & Cons-

Pro- wool is faster cutting and generates less friction heat and therefore leaves the surface cooler, removes heavy oxidation much more efficiently than a form pad. Wool pads are easier to control compared to foam. They glide as the wool nap ‘lies down’ and will conform to vehicle body shape easily. Make certain to spur the wool fibres when it loads up with product. Removes heavy oxidation much more efficiently than a form pad

Con- wool can leave micro marring (buffer trails) finish with a foam pad to remove. Don’t overwork the polish as wool will break diminishing abrasives faster than foam, the surface lubricants will dry up faster and you could end up dry buffing unless you’re careful. More polish is required when using wool, especially when using finishing wool.
There are too many variables with different wool and foam types, along with too many compounds to give a definite choice.

                General notes -
                a) Wool pads work with a centrifugal action (rotary polisher) they are not recommended for use with an orbital

Re: What would you use a Wool Polishing Pad for?

Even with Meguiar's line up we have wool pads with varying levels of aggressiveness. Our W5000 double sided wool pad is our most aggressive wool pad, with the WWLC7 is our least aggressive wool pad. While still not a polishing pad per se (we call it a light cutting pad) is definitely doesn't cut like the W5000. It can finish out surprisingly well, however, depending on speed, liquid used, and the paint itself.

For headlight restoration we usually find that, after wet sanding down to 3000 grit, you can use a moderate wool pad with M105 via rotary and then finish with a foam polishing pad and M205 for a crystal clear finish.
