  • Using Deep Crystal and cheap orbital buffers

I've used the 3-step Deep Crystal products for 20 years or so, always by hand, on my black '87 T-bird. I'm getting too old to keep doing this by hand - my back can't take it any longer and I'm tired of jamming my fingers all the time. I've picked up a couple of cheap orbital buffers - a 10' Ryobi and a 6" cordless Craftsman to help speed up the process and take away some of the pain.

    Questions:
    1) Are these OK to use with the Deep Crystal products? I've read some posts that said that better polishers like the G110v2 are NOT needed/recommended for the DC products.
    2) What are the best bonnets to use for application and removal of each of the 3 steps? i.e. In my experimenting, I haven't found any that are good for taking off the DC Paint Cleaner, so I end up just using a cotton cloth.

I'm OK with doing part of it by hand, but it's too much for me to do all six steps (application & removal X 3 steps) by hand. Also, if I need to buy a G110v2, that's OK. But, if not needed, why buy it?

I've gotten awesome results with the DC 3-step process and am not really looking to change; just need a better way to do it. Although, I made need to use SwirlX once or twice to get rid of some of the few swirl marks that I've obtained over the years that the DC cleaner isn't quite getting out.

    Maybe off-topic.

How about replacing DC-1 and DC-2 with SwirlX? This will save you one step.

That's an idea. Does SwirlX do the same as DC-1 and DC-2? I saw SwirlX as only removing swirls and scratch marks, whereas DC-1 removes oxides and other blemishes and DC-2 polishes.

Along those lines - where does deep crystal paint cleaner (step 1) fit on the agressive scale (compared to say swirlx)? I heard the deep crystal paint cleaner (step 1) and polish (step2) were discontinued. Does anyone know if that is true?

DC1 is way less aggressive than Swirl X. It doesn't really have the power to remove swirls - it just cleans the paint. Which is why it got discontinued, being replaced with Swirl X, Scratch X 2.0, and Ultimate Compound. DC2 did not get discontinued - it and DC3 just got relabeled so they didn't have the Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 written on them. Also, it is perfectly fine to use the Deep Crystal products with an orbital if that is what you want to do.

Just curious, what are DC2 and DC3 now called? I still get confused with these numbers.

They're still called Deep Crystal Polish and Deep Crystal Carnauba Wax. They've just been relabeled:

              Deep Crystal Polish
              Before

              After relabel

              Deep Crystal Carnauba Wax
              Before

              After

My car is 5-6 years old MB and it has been maintained by Meguiars products since the beginning.
I only do the full detailing treatment (Wash-Clay-Clean-Polish-Wax-Wax) only once a year, usually after winter. For the rest of the year, I wash and wax often. For the wax, I alternate NXT, Cleaner Wax. If I put a 2nd coat, I used M21 or Yellow Wax.

Maybe my car is easier to maintain because it is silver, it looks brand new even after 150K KM.

Thanks CieraSL for the info. That makes sense and answers some questions I've had.

Thanks! It is funny how I have been here this long and there are still things I see labeled by numbers and don't even know what they are or what they do.
