  • Paint peeled off with tape after buffing

I painted the rear quarter panel on my 2003 yukon about 2 weeks ago. I bought a rotary buffer and the meguiar's solo one kit to buff it out with. Well I buffed it out this afternoon, I put tape on all the trim around the window and along the edge of the door in front of the quarter. The quarter was wet sanded with 2500 grit paper and then I used the wool light cutting pad, then the white foam pad, and then the black pad. It looked great when I was done, but when I pulled the tape of the door it pulled about a 2" x 3" long section of paint off the door so now I have repaint that area of the door. Any Idea why this happened.

I guess the obvious question is what tape did you use? I use the blue painters tape and never had a problem. It could also be the paint /prep itself.

The area that peeled off was the oem paint, not the area that I had just painted, and yes I was using the blue painters tape also.

Yikes. Was the paint damaged to begin with?

I have seen tape leave a residue behind on trim that was hard to remove, but never seen blue tape pull healthy factory paint.

If it was already chipped and peeling - then maybe - but even than that would likely only happen if it sat there for an extended period of time.

Maybe, because it was not completely cured. He stated he did this after 2 weeks?

If you re=read his post I think he means the paint peeled on the panel that was NOT painted. He painted the q-panel and the paint pealed from the door which he taped off while he buffed out the other panel.

Like Mark said, I've never seen blue painters tape pull healthy factory paint. As a matter of fact I've never seen anything adhesive pull healthy paint. Of course I'm talking about something that was purposly put on a painted surface for the right reasons.

I would chk the door with a mill gage and also other panels My bet would be that the door was painted after oem.

Did just clear come off or color also ?

I test paint at the bodyshop with duct tape to check adhesion on previous repaired panels

Was it rusted under the paint that pulled off? I would NEVER imagine that factory paint could be ripped off like that... If it was the repainted section I would blame it on prep as I've seen car-bras rip off repainted surfaces that had poor prep.

It was not rusted under the paint. It pulled the clear and the base but left the primer. I have no idea if that area was repaired before I bought it. Is it possible the buffer might have heated up the paint in that area. It's weird, that area where it peeled was about an inch from the edge of the door. I would have thought if the buffer caused it it would have been right on the edge of the door. I'm scared now because I was going to buff the rest of the truck with just the finishing pad but i'm afraid of damaging more of the oem paint.

You would have noticed burning through the clear if you truly heated the paint up hot enough to rip it off.

In the future, peel the tape back on itself.

There is a window that the clear has to be applied and if the window is exceeded than the base needs scuffed and than the clear applied if you wait to long you can have adhesion issue with the clear. Or it can be a chemical issue and it can happen at the oem level. checking the film build would tell the tail if oem or previous repair.

I remember a GM paint recall for this. I've been trying to find the year range but I'm coming up short.

I've seen this in person, put some tape on the paint (usually duct tape for the demo) and the factory paint came clean off.

I want to say it was the mid-late 90's, but I cannot remember.
