  • Help with Scratches Please

    Hey All -

I am quite new to Meguiar's products and so far have been pretty pleased with the results. I own two black SUVs: LR3 and G500.

On the LR3, I have tried ScratchX to get out some relatively small scratches both by hand and with an orbital buffer that I bought at Home Depot.

Neither seems to be working. I have gone over them several times, followed the directions on the container and in your tutorials online, and still no results.

The size would approximate (and this is the best I can think of) if one were to scratch with a diamond ring against the paint. They are white in appearance.

Should I step up to a different product or do you have further advice as to how to get scratchX to work.

    I appreciate it.

Also, in general I do rinse, wash, dry, blemish detail (scratches, swirls, etc.), wax. What else should I add to this process? I prefer to work by hand whenever possible.

    Thanks!

I also look forward to the responses to this. Just this weekend I was able to get the swirls out of my trunk/boot lid, but there are two small, straight scratches I can't seem to get out. They are only visible with a halogen work light or in the sun and I can't feel them with my fingernail or otherwise. I've tried Swirl-X, Scratch-X, by hand and with the DA with more agressive pads.

I'm tempted to move up to Ultimate Compound, but will wait to see if others have suggestions.

By the way, as I understand things, what I thought would be soft paint on my Mazda MX-5 seems to be rather hard--I had to work harder than I thought I would to get out the few, light swirls on the trunk lid. I ended up doing two passes with Swirl-X and a LC green pad on the DA, one more pass with Swirl-X and a LC orange pad, then then finally Scratch-X with the orange pad. As I said, the two scratches remain even though I tried to "spot reduce them" with Scratch-X, first by hand, then with the DA and the orange pad.

Is there any chance of pics?

If the white is from the clear reflecting light, a product may help. If the white is primer, then you are stuck.

If they are only visable in halogen light/sunlight, an option is to simply let it go. It sounds as if an aggressive method would be needed to remove enough paint, in order to level the surface enough to completely remove the two scratches.

Wet sandpaper, heavy compound combined with an aggressive pad and rotary combo are methods that would remove/level the paint.

You could try a heavy compound combined with an aggressive pad on an orbital to level it out, but there is always the option of just letting it go and live with two scratches that can be barely seen.

Try to look at the whole picture.
