  • New Paint Orange Peel?!

I took a good look at my repainted passenger side (My Dodge Charger got keyed 3 mos. ago) and noticed what I called "fingerprint" like impressions.

Michael Stoops of Meguiar's pointed out that it's orange peel which is how repainted jobs can look whereas factory paint doesn't have it..

How can I avoid getting this kind of paint job in the future? My insurance had various "Dodge-approved" body shops that I chose from..

I almost want to get it repainted from a better paint shop..

Tell the body shop you are not satisfied....YOU are the CUSTOMER. Especially if you went through an approved shop. If you order a rare hamburger and they bring you a hockey puck...would you accept it? Just because it was not painted at the factory, does not mean there should be orange peel. Tell them to fix it!
There's no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you'll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

There are plenty of factory paints that have orange peel, but besides the point. Depending how bad it is and your insurance company, you may give them a call and have someone come out and look at it. I went with my mother to pick up her truck a few years back after a full repaint. The orange peel was the absolute worst I have ever seen, amongst other defects in the paint. She got a hold of the insurance company, who eventually forced them to repaint the entire truck again. There was still orange peel the second time, but what I'd pretty much compare to the factory amount. I mean, to get crystal clear paint like that, especially on a re-paint, you'll most likely be paying for it, if the shop is even capable of performing such a task.

In Florida, at least, it's permissible to choose any body shop you wish. You don't have to take it to the schlock houses they suggest.

You can always have it wet sanded and buffed, and fingerprints in the clear coat is not "orange peel" it's probably fingerprints.

Careful now.... I never said that factory paint does not have orange peel, just that the texture of your respray does not match that of the factory paint job. Huge difference there. It's actually quite difficult to find a factory paint job without some degree of orange peel. Heck, my neighbors just acquired a brand new Infiniti QX56 SUV in a very dark metallic gray and the orange peel is noticeable from a fair distance.

Just to clarify, this texture is called orange peel because that is exactly what it looks like - the uneven surface of the peel of an orange. Obviously any true fingerprints would be rare and isolated (not to mention a glaring oversight on the part of the body shop!) and not throughout the paint job.

If you can get some pictures for us that would really help, just in case you're dealing with something related to poor prep prior to the paint actually being shot.

Thanks for saying more about it Michael.. I looked at some pics of orange peel and that it NOT my problem.. no orange peel.

It is near impossible for me to capture my paint problem on camera.. I have use my Brinkmann dual xenon very carefully just to see it. It's like there are circles and lines under the clearcoat, not scratches..

Maybe I can show it to you really quickly when I attend the Thurs Night Open Garage or Saturday Class..

While we're certainly more than happy to check it out for you, our first TNOG of the season is still a month away. If you have serious concerns about this repaint you should voice those to the body shop right away. Have the manager look at it in direct sunlight, point out the areas of concern to him, and point out that it is noticeably different than the rest of the car. We aren't talking a little color match issue than he can try to argue away - it could be a situation of poor prep before shooting the color. Not trying to spook you here, just want to make sure you get satisfaction and that the body shop stands behind their work.
