I believe no where near as hard. Epoxy is very hard, and you could leave it in dozens (hundreds) of rains and I dont think it would disolve or be washed away. Epoxy becomes very hard, almost like the clearcoat, and is essentially permanent (which is why it is used to glue things permanently together).
Wax or Sealant is a great "temporary" (a few months) coat to maximize the shine and protect the underlying paint but it is not a rock-hard layer of protection, and can be easily scratched and can be easily removed by claying and/or by detergent washing. And, as you said, it is also amazingly thin.
Waxes and sealants are both sacrificial and thin, and none are as strong or hard as your paint. Consider that things like bird droppings and acid rain can actually etch into your paint, cause serious damage. Consider further, then, that this microscopically thin layer of product that you pour out of a bottle, wipe onto and off of the paint, is simply not an impervious barrier against this sort of thing. In order for it to be, that microscopically thin layer would have to be harder and more resilient than paint. It simply is not, nor is it intended to be.
