    hey everyone,

Ive been browsing the forum for a little over a week now and Im in the market to fix up my Black 4x4 SUV I recieved for Christmas. The paint is in fair condition considering its a FL truck but it does have its issues. The clear coat is cracking on the hood and it has its share of scratches and marks.

Ive been watching the videos on meguiars youtube channel trying to get an idea of the products I need. I cant really afford to pay a detailer right now and Im wanting to learn how to do this stuff anyways. I know I cant get out all the scratches or fix the cracked clear coat without painting so I'm just going to do what I can for right now

First product I purchased was Scratch X, I started on the hood and got some great results from it but it got pretty cold over the past couple days so I have not been at it again. Seems like when i fix one scratch I notice 5 more though

After browsing and watching I made another order a couple days ago (will be here tomorrow)

    (all meguiars)

    • Mild Clay Bar
    • Clay bar box kit
    • Quick Detailer
    • Scratch X
    • Swirl X
    • Ultimate Compound
    • Deep Crystal Polish
    • Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner
    • NXT 2.0 Wax
    • 4/pck Applicator pads
    • Microfiber Supreme Shine 6 pack

My question is, besides a buffer (don't know when Ill have one of those) what else should I get?

Unfortunately I can't wash my SUV at my house because theres too much iron in my water and leaves nasty spots that I have to manually clean by hand to get out. Anyone have an alternative besides going to the money hog AKA car wash?

    thanks guys

Well, product choice will depend on your desired results as well as the conditon of that paint. Start with the least agressive products and work your way up until you get the desired result.

The one thing I would recommned for you that will solve the hard water problem is to order a bottle fo ONR. The quart is enough to wash your car every week for about 6 months or so.

Simply pick up two gallons of distilled water and mix one oz of the ONR in with it and you can wash the car at home with no problems.

The ONR will cost you about $15 and figure $1-$2 per gallon of water, but in the long run it's still cheaper than the coin op wash. Plus if you're using quality MF towels, it's safer for your paint than the brushes at the coin op would be in most cases.

Other than that, it sounds like you're on the right track at the moment.

Well, there are always more products you may "need".... Glass cleaners, APC, dressingss, etc.

As far as the truck, yeah, I'd wash it and clay everything. Then just worry about a panel or so at a time with the SwirlX/UC, polish and wax.

That's true for sure. I have enough stuff to treat almost anything on my cars and I still find my self "needing" more products to round out my aresenal

Right now, I'm looking for a little robot slave to clean up the splatter and excess wax left behind when I forgot to mask certain parts of the car yesterday before hitting it with the DA.

thanks guys, Im hopin to find a semi cheap buffer just to make the job a little easier.

Im assuming I should attempt to tackle the scratches with scratch X first and then go over the stubborn ones with Compound? (I realize I wont get all the scratches out) It seems like compound is the heavy duty stuff as in *last resort* am I correct?

Im tryin to put together all the exterior products I need, and then move on to wheel/tire products and interior when money comes around. But I think my collection is off to a good start for now

Well, kinda.... but after you try one scratch/bad swirl, you should see which product you need. Then repeat everywhere else.

You might like to run ideas past us... maybe keep you from doubling up on anything, or getting less important things.
