  • My Winter Wash Regimen

So guys...im from Jersey..im sure some of you has seen me post in other threads about "winter washing" and i've discovered plenty of useful information about products such as ONR and how to use them..unfortunately i live in NJ and in the winter time i have to shut off the outside water supply to my garden hose..its not my choice, but parents choice. they say they dont want the "pipes to freeze"...anyway theres nothing i can do to change their mind about it..so here we go...ive put a lot of thought into this..i dont want to spend 7 bucks at the coin operated wash to bring my 2 buckets and soap and have to drive back and forth..its worth it, but its just such an inconvenience...and i just could never get used to using ONR and not rinsing the car and seeing my mitt get so dirty..i would go crazy ! and i know ONR is a good product..i know its well recommended..but i just couldnt do it ! i just need to use my 2 buckets, hose, and my handy dandy meguiars soap ! i need the suds, the soapy solution, the bubbles, the lubricity, i need it all..its just not a wash to me without them..so anyway, on to my point. i have all that i just said except one thing, the hose, in the winter time...so i went to lowes and picked up this....

yes thats right...its the garden and lawn hand pump sprayer..the one you use to spray solution onto your plants...well it works perfect as a mechanical hose ! the tank is a 2 gallon capacity...it takes about 5-10 pumps and it sprays water constantly for about 2 minutes...on just 5-10 pumps..its insane..and it sprays water pretty good..its got a nice wide spray pattern, and sprays decently hard. the whole tank lasts me the whole car, sometimes much clean water is left over..

and what about the soap ? well i use super soap ! i dont know how many people have tried super soap, but i own a gallon and its amazing..when meguiars says that it rinses effortlessly, it really does...it takes little effort to rinse the suds free off of the car...so this combo of the water sprayer and super soap go perfect together...and im being serious, the sprayer sprays a really good amount of water..you'd be surprised. this is my permanent way of washing in the winter, and im sticking to it..it will keep me happy and its no different than a regular summer wash..im happy !!!

I know it's hard to believe that ONR works but it does. I used it last weekend and it was amazing.

Oh yes, you're absolutely right! I hope it didn't seem like I was trying to knock your idea. I reread my post and I think it may have come across as that way. Let me know how everything works out. I'm always up for trying different ways

Great idea Mazda 3 guy. I'm also looking for easier ways to clean the black work cars in the winter.

I just ordered ONR last night, I'm hoping it works as well for me as it does for everyone else!

Interesting idea. I live in MI and they cover the roads in salt when it snows. I have a black 2009 Nissan, well I should say gray in color now, considering its salt covered.

I am interested in how the ONR works on salt covered cars? Since the car is black, fine swirls easily show up in the paint if not washed properly. As you mention, "need the suds, the soapy solution, the bubbles, the lubricity" I feel I am in the same boat. But it is definitely a pain to have to bring supplies to the quarter car wash and do the washing there.

Let me know how the pump and spray works out for you.

Which Meguiar's shampoo is the "super soap"?

Indeed if the soap you are using rinses easily, your pump sprayer should work.

One of my old detailing books (1991 copyright) suggests a two bucket method to save water. Different than Meguiar's two bucket suggestion. Using this method on bucket is plain rinse water, the other bucket has the shampoo. You also use two mitts - a shampoo mitt and a rinse mitt.

If you are really paranoid about swirls and scratches you might want to experiment a bit with using your sprayer (or maybe two sprayers --one wash and one rinse) and ONR of QEW. You can't beat their lubricity.

I think that a lot of us use the rinseless washes because they tend to cause less of a wet mess than regular wash and rinse methods.

Whatever -- have fun and stay warm.

okay guys..so i washed my car with the sprayer...it worked out very well !! it may be a little bit more time consuming but its a heck of a lot better than 7 bucks at the coin op and the hastle and hustling things along with you..barely any water gets onto the ground so it didnt freeze on my driveway...super soap is a soap in the detailer line designed to foam up and wash gently, yet break down quickly when rinses away....it was a little bit more time consuming, but it was gentle..and easy..took me about 10 minutes to wash the whole car..im pretty happy with this setup for the winter

10 minutes to wash the whole car!?!? Holy cow! That's pretty cool. It takes me about 45 minutes to an hour to do my car with ONR. Although like I've said before I make molasses look like a Ford GT.

Oh BTW. I'm not trying to hijack the thread but I forgot my chemical sprayer for ONR at home as I'm an hour away at my parents. My mom has a chem. sprayer that has had chemicals in the past. Do you guys think if I wash it out with a bleach/water solution it should be okay to use or should I just splurge and get another sprayer for like 10 bucks?

dont waste your money..just clean out the other sprayer..and yes about 10-15 minutes...i literally filled up the tank..gave the car a real quick spray down...cleaned my wheels..and from the time i layed my mitt on the paint..passed over the whole car, and rinsed it completely..about 15 minutes..

                              great idea.

I am a Michigander and ordered some ONR this week. Got it yesterday and tried it today. I went to the coin-op only because its heated. I filled my sprayer up at home with warm water and ONR mixed in for a presoak. Then bought two 2 gal. gas cans and filled those with warm water.

Brought my buckets, poured in the ONR water from the gas cans. Presoaked the car with the sprayer and viola!

I do like your idea mazda guy.
