  • Do I need to strip the wax before clay?

I have decided I want to try some clay on some surfaces like the hood since they seem to have a lot of bonded contaminates. The problem is I just waxed it with Mequiars paste cleaner wax. Do I need to strip the wax so that the clay can work better or just let the clay remove the wax. If I need to remove the wax what should I use?

Re: Do I need to strip the wax before clay?

me personally i always use a strong detergent soap like dawn dish soap to help strip wax and other film on a car before i detail and add a fresh coat of wax. clay will remove wax also, but ive always use dawn.
just dont use it often as you will dry out your paint and other surfaces on your vehicle. youd want to stick with a quality soap like gold class car wash soap on a regular basis and only dish soap to strip...
remember to knead the clay and not to just flip it over

I woud just go ahead and clay the car, then you can go ahead and apply a new application of your Cleaner Wax.

You can just wash normally and clay.

You may find yo uwant to just clay everything. Then cleaner/wax again after.

I would let the clay remove the wax and contaminants. Never have been a fan of using dish detergent on the vehicle.

Let the clay remove it. Cars aint dishes.

The need to remove the wax in the first place isn't so serious that you should be using a soap designed to remove plant and animal grease off of dishes and silverware.
