  • Clay, ScratchX, wax???

I'm new to MOL but I have been reading about haze and oxidation. I have a '86 Lebaron Conv, steel blue in color, great condition...except the paint is a little faded and hazy. I used another brand (I know my bad) of "scratch doctor" and it did help, but not to my satisfaction. After reading many many posts on here, I think I need to clay first, then use ScratchX, then wax??? I watched the video on claying, one question should I wash the car before claying?

I'm totally open to any & all suggestions...

Clay will remove things that are stuck in the paint of the vehicle. While it might remove some oxidation, it's not the best way to do this. Still, if your paint is oxidized then it probably needs to be clayed in order for a polish to do a much better job. While I don't have much experience in this area, I'd recommend a cleaner/wax on the entire car. Without seeing photos of the paint it's tough to say what should be used.

      1. How "faded and hazy?"
      2. Are you are planning to do the job by hand or machine?
      3. What are you goals?
Generally, it's recommended you wash before claying. Claying will remove surface bonded contaminants, but if you don't wash first your clay will get dirty pretty quickly and you run the risk of instilling scratches and swirls from larger particles of dirt getting stuck in the clay.

Yeah, seeing some pics would help for sure.

Assuming working by hand, you would generally start with:
        1. Wash
        2. Clay
        3. Clean - SwirlX on a test area first, then stepping up to Ultimate Compound if needed.
        4. Wax

It would be optional to use a pure polish. You can if you want, but SwirLX will have some polishing oils in it also.

I will try to get some pics that show the haziness, it's not super bad just not shiny. And it definitely will be done by hand....

Get plenty of rest and start eating your Wheaties. Hand paint correction is next to humanly impossible for an entire vehicle. Next month Meguiar's is coming out with a new dual action polisher. Might wanna check it out.
