  • White Fit getting yellow

    Hi there!

I own a white Honda Fit
It's parked outdoor most of the time, open to the elements
lots of rain and sun, pollutions (I live in Bangkok)
and I found out it's turning a bit yellow after a year i bought it
I've been waxing with m21 twice a month for half a year now

    So here's the questions
1 - What can I do to make the paint become white as the original?
2 - What should I do to prevent it from turing yellow again?

    Thanks,

    Cheers

How are you washing the car? Do you wash it by hand at home, do you run it through an automatic car wash, or what? Some automatic car washes will dull the paint with continuous use.

Other than that, it sounds to me like you might be waxing too often. Too much wax will dull (and can potentially discolor) your paint. If you want to wax frequently, then wax with M21 once a month and use something like Ultimate Quik Wax as a booster wax in between regular wax sessions. Just remember that UQW must be used on a clean surface, and is only intended for use once or twice a week - no more than that.

      1. Go ahead and clay your car, then use a light paint cleaner like Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner or Swirl X to remove old wax and discoloration. You didn't mention anything about scratches or swirls. Do you have those? If DC1 or Swirl X don't work, then you might want to bump up to something more aggressive, like Scratch X 2.0 or Ultimate Compound.
      2. Let us know what your regular car care routine is, and then we can answer better from there.

Okay, anytime I read anything regarding "white Honda paint", the first thing I think about is that it *might* be single stage paint and not a clear coat.

Check out the paint code and find out if it is SS or CC. If it is "tafetta white", then it is probably single stage and I have found through personal experience, the single stage Honda paints are pretty porous.

I had/am still having, problems with a SS White Honda Civic and staining within the paint.

If your car is anything like the Civic I'm talking about, you are fighting an uphill battle, but here is what you have to do...

        Wash the car VERY well.

        Clay.

Wash a second time, because if a lot of the pollutants are imbedded in the paint the way they imbed on my civic, then you'll want to wash a second time, to ensure the surface is ready for polishing.

If it is SS paint, dip into the past and break out M80 and a DA. Thoroughly polish the entire car. I should be WHITE again.

Seal. Two coats of NXT 2.0 or whatever sealant (not wax) you like. If you can, put the sealant on the car 12 hours apart.

That is the best I've been able to do on my problem car.

          Re: White Fit getting yellow

I believe my car has a Clear Coat, since i used scratch x to remove some scratch and the paint doesnt come off(no white stuff on my foam pad)

I wash my car with Gold class, one a week, wax with m21 almost every 2-3 weeks.
Thats all im using right now, some guy told me that waxing with 21 will make it yellow and ill be need cleaner/wax too.

          any suggestion

          cheers!

wow, I think we have the similar weather situation, rain, sun and pollution.. I live in Jakarta, Indonesia..
I do believe Honda's have a CC and is not a SS paint..

Probably the best way to keep your white car from getting yellow is,
do a full correction detail if you haven't before:

            1. Wash
            2. Clay
            3. Clean with Ultimate Compound + Swirl X (least aggresive first)
            4. Wax
            5. Wax

Maintain it by washing it at least 2-3 times a week, after every wash use UQW/UQD
Every 2 Month re-wax it with your favourite wax, I like to use NXT 2.0 :], you may want to use a Cleaner/Wax like colorX or DC Cleaner/Wax to remove some of the light water spots caused by the rain first and then follow it with two thin layers of wax.

            good luck

Not necessarily. Anything "Taffeta White" is SS paint, not clear coat.

                Re: White Fit getting yellow

I've never been to Bangkok but the air quality would probably have to be so bad that I'd be dead soon for me to wax that frequently. Do you live near a factory? What I would do is this:

Do a good thorough wash once a week (not every 2-3 days, again, that's too much) with Gold Class car wash using the two-bucket method described in this video. Washing is key. If you don't let stuff sit on your car for very long, it will never be a problem. It's also important that you wash properly like the video displays.

Try waxing once every 2-3 months (try 3 at first since you're waxing so often now). Just ease up on it. Twice a month is too much. It's very possible that you're waxing so much that it's effecting the look of the vehicle. NXT 2.0 chemically bonds to the paint and it doesn't come off that easy so as long as you don't use dish soap to wash the car or strip of the wax using any other harsh chemicals, that's plenty.

Lastly, make sure you clay before you wax using the method in this video. Claying is important especially in a polluted and abused environment like what you described. Go out to your car and rub your hand over the paint. If you can hear your hand, clay the car. When you clay, pay attention to the clay and see how much grime gets onto it. This should dramatically help as well. Do this before you wax each time.

Whoa. Taffeta White is a SS paint? My Accord is Taffeta White and I can see where the clear coat is coming off in some places. I'll check this thread when I get home to see the pictures.

What year Accord? My sister has a white 2008 2 door Taffeta White Accord and it is SS.

It is a service bulletin from Honda. If you have Taffetta White under paint code NH-578, it could be single stage.

They also do a CC with the same paint code for certain models, but it is not a guarantee that it is clear coat... that was my initial point.
