  • Tires not shining

On many of the vehicles i have detailed, the tires have never been shined/protected. So I spray the shine on, and in 20min the look as dry and crusty as they started! Is there a product that will really work itself into the older and beaten tires?

    What products have you used?

Just like with the paint I would clean the tires before applying a dressing. I have used Bleche White in the past, but be careful because it is very caustic. I am not sure of other methods to clean the tires but others will be sure to chime in.

If you are cleaning and they're still getting crusty, try another application.

Good cleaning helps out. Removing everything present on the tires surface and applying the dressing on a clean surface will help with shine and lasting effect

What tire dressing are you using?

If the tires have been severely neglected for a long time it will take a few coats, with time to let it soak in between each coat.

Well I do clean them. Very thoroughly. I have tried almost eyery spray and aerosol spray on the market. If I try to allpy more than 1 coat, it all just slides off. A complete waste!

I agree with the others that have already mentioned about making sure the tires are very clean. No dressing or gel, or whatever your preferred product is will work well if all you are doing it laying it on top of dirt.

I use APC or Super Degreaser usually to clean the tires and I get in job where some tires are filthy and have NEVER been cleaned. I let the APC or Super Degreaser sit for a few minutes to let it work than take a wheel/tire brush and scrub the tire very well. Sometimes you need to repeat this process a second time if the tire was really neglected and dirty.
Only after the tire is scrubbed clean can you effectively apply your preferred finishing product.

Final looks on tires are very subjective and people like different things as a final result. I tried various products, some Megs, some other brands. Some were too glossy/shiney, others not glossy enough, some gel type products tend to sling off, etc.
For MY preference anyway I found what I like the looks of the most was from spraying on Megs Hyper Dressing (2:1 dilution), letting it sit for a few minutes than lightly wiping off the excess and letting the rest dry down even. When it finishes drying it gives a nice clean, semi-shine that's not too glossy but looks good and looks "finished".
Try the same process on a dirty tire though and by the next morning the tires simply look mottled and brown. On a clean tire it looks good and it lasts decently.
What am I, fly-paper for morons?

Are you waiting for the first coat to fully dry before applying a second coat?

I have never experienced issues with applying multiple coats and the dressing not sticking as long as the first coat is dry. Of course, if you try one right after the other it will run right off.

Well, I have been detailing neibors cars recently, and their tires have never been shined, but i wash them with the car wash soap when I have finished the car itself. I apply, then wait for it to dry, then I apply another coat.
The tires on my van are probably pushing 4 years..
The two backs are 4, the two fronts we bought last September so they look beautiful.

I detailed a GMC Envoy recently and it took 3 coats of All Season Dressing to make it look presentable and dressed looking.

Perhaps the problem originates from the product?

have you tried using several different products?

Yes, as I said, I have tried all turtle wax products, all wet black products, all megs products, all armor all products, and all eagle one products. No luck.

If all you are using is the car wash soap too clean the neglected tires. I think you have to use something stronger. Like apc, or super degreaser. Also use a dedicated tire brush. The bristles should be stiffer to clean the sidewalls. Try this then apply your dressing.
